Recently, a flow-based selectin-dependent method for capture and enrichment of specific type blood cells (CD34+ hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells) from bone marrow and peripheral blood has been described. Using a similar approach, here we show isolation of CD45+ blood cells directly from human bone marrow to a high purity (90%-97%). The process mimics a ubiquitous mechanism of cell trafficking in the body for the recruitment of neutrophils during inflammation.

Sol-gel coatings which elute bioactive silver ions are presented as a potential solution to the problem of biofilm formation on indwelling surfaces. There is evidence that high-temperature processing of such materials can lead to diffusion of silver away from the coating surface, reducing the amount of available silver. In this study, we report the biofilm inhibition of a Staphylococcus epidermidis biofilm using a low-temperature processed silver-doped phenyltriethoxysilane sol-gel coating.

The antifungal compound 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol (Phl) contributes to biocontrol in pseudomonads, but whether or not Phl(+) biocontrol pseudomonads display higher plant-protecting activity than Phl(-) biocontrol pseudomonads remains to be demonstrated. This issue was addressed by assessing 230 biocontrol fluorescent pseudomonads selected from a collection of 3132 bacterial isolates obtained from 63 soils worldwide. One-third of the biocontrol pseudomonads were Phl(+) and almost all Phl(+) isolates also produced hydrogen cyanide (HCN).

In this paper, we show that histograms represent spatial function distributions with a nearest neighbour interpolation. We confirm that this results in systematic underrepresentation of transitional features of the data, and provide new insight why this occurs. We further show that isosurface statistics, which use higher quality interpolation, give better representations of the function distribution.

As a preliminary study of the utility of the natural stable-isotopic differentiation of batch samples produced by different synthetic pathways, multi-stable-isotopic analyses (delta(13)C, delta(15)N, delta(18)O, deltaD) of 53 samples of the antiepileptic drug, Topiramate, produced by three different synthetic pathways (designated "A," "B," "C") were performed. From the outset, we note that there are two fundamental variables that determine the stable-isotopic composition of materials-the stable-isotopic composition of the reagents and starting intermediates, and the isotope fractionation that occurs during manufacture of the product. In this study, the stable-isotopic composition of the raw materials was not controlled and we report here data obtained for a suite of samples that was produced by three synthetic pathways.

G2/M checkpoints prevent mitotic entry upon DNA damage or replication inhibition by targeting the Cdc2 regulators Cdc25 and Wee1. Although Wee1 protein stability is regulated by DNA-responsive checkpoints, the vertebrate pathways controlling Wee1 degradation have not been elucidated. In budding yeast, stability of the Wee1 homologue, Swe1, is controlled by a regulatory module consisting of the proteins Hsl1 and Hsl7 (histone synthetic lethal 1 and 7), which are targeted by the morphogenesis checkpoint to prevent Swe1 degradation when budding is inhibited.
