Objective: To assess the levels of cytokines in the follicular fluid of stimulated ovaries.

Design: The study included two groups of four patients with polycystic ovarian disease. These were diagnosed by clinical and ultrasonic features and characteristic hormonal profiles, treated with gonadotropin-releasing hormone-analogue and human menopausal gonadotropin.

The role of cervical cerclage was evaluated in 54 pregnant women with anomalous uteri. Forty-six of them delivered live neonates, and eight aborted. The success rate was 85.

The effect of cervical cerclage on the survival rate of the fetus was studied in 86 pregnancies of women with congenital uterine anomalies and a random group of 106 pregnancies in women with normal shaped uteri. The uterine morphologic factors were determined in all by hysterosalpingography, and when necessary, hysteroscopy and laparoscopy were combined. The incidence of hysterosalpingography-proved cervical incompetence (23 per cent) was similar in both groups.

The obstetric risk associated with congenital uterine malformations was studied in a group of 67 women who had undergone hysterosalpingography (HSG) during an eight-year period. HSG was performed to investigate primary (21% of the cases) and secondary (19%) infertility (group 1) or recurrent early fetal loss (60%) (group 2). The study group was compared with a random control group of 130 patients with HSG-proven normal uteri, matched for the presenting symptom.

Neurologic manifestations of pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) vary from diffuse symptoms such as headache and confusion to focal signs such as paralysis and visual loss. Recognition of the neurologic symptoms associated with PIH is essential for early diagnosis of severe preeclampsia and eclampsia. The recent advances in neuroradiologic imaging, including the use of computed tomography (CT) scans and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), have greatly enhanced our understanding of the correlation between neurologic complaints and neuroanatomic pathological changes characteristic of preeclampsia and eclampsia.

To estimate the effect of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia on long-term cognitive ability in full-term newborns with a negative Coombs test, we performed a 17-year historical prospective study of 1948 subjects. Intelligence tests and medical examinations performed at the military draft board were stratified according to serum bilirubin concentration. A logistic regression analysis was used to adjust for the confounding effects of gestational age, birth weight, Apgar score, ethnic origin, socioeconomic class, paternal education, birth order, and the administration of phototherapy and exchange transfusion.

Objective: To investigate the influence of maternal pre-eclampsia on the blood pressure, physique and intelligence of the offspring at the age of 17 years.

Design: Data obtained at the age of 17 during assessment for drafting to the Israel Defence Forces and from the records of the mothers' pregnancies from the Jerusalem Perinatal Study.

Subjects: Study subjects were 145 girls and 283 boys whose mothers had had pre-eclampsia and controls were 12,701 girls and 20,416 boys whose mothers did not have pre-eclampsia.

Total amputation of the penis is a disfiguring, and functionally and psychologically disabling injury. We report a case of successful microvascular replantation following self-emasculation by a psychotic patient. The need for a multidisciplinary approach combining the expertise of such diverse disciplines as surgery, intensive care and psychiatry is emphasized.

A total of 33,413 infants born in Jerusalem between 1964 and 1971 were followed up at 17 years of age by matching computerized database files. A logistic regression model was used to estimate the odds ratios for being overweight at 17 years of age for 500-g birth weight categories from less than 2500 g to 4500 g or greater. Information on the ethnic origin, paternal education, birth order, maternal age, and area of residence at birth was available, and these factors were used as possible confounders.

The long-term effects of vacuum and forceps deliveries are largely unknown. We determined the long-term outcome of instrumental deliveries in 52,282 infants born in Jerusalem between 1964 and 1972. For each individual, events at birth were related to results of an intelligence test and medical examination done at 17 years of age by the Israeli Defence Forces draft board.

Study Objective: The aim was to assess the effects of genetic factors and environmental influences on adolescence body height.

Design: The study was a retrospective survey of mean standing height collected from computerised medical draft records of 17-18 year old adolescents, born between 1950 and 1971.

Setting: All the studied population is resident of the state of Israel.

The association between low Apgar scores (7 or less) at 1 and 5 minutes and cognitive performance in late adolescence was assessed. A 17-year follow-up of 1942 subjects was performed. The intelligence test scores at 17 years of age were matched with 1- and 5-minutes Apgar scores.

Objective--To study the effect of birth weight and body weight on blood pressure in late adolescence. Design--Analysis of data on weight, height, and blood pressure at age 17 of subjects from the Jerusalem perinatal study, according to their birth weight. Data for men and women were analysed separately.

The effect of low birth weight on the incidence of asthma by 17 years of age was investigated by studying medical draft examination records of 20,312 male subjects born in Jerusalem between January 1967 and December 1971. Additional information on birth weight and other demographic factors was abstracted from the Jerusalem Perinatal Study computerised database. A stepwise multiple logistic regression was used to estimate the odds ratios for developing asthma by 17 years of age in 500 g birthweight categories from less than 2000 g to 4500 g.

The successful release of severe contracture of the first web space depends on addition of a sufficient amount of skin. Because local skin is limited, skin grafts tend to contract, and free and pedicle flaps are bulky, further procedures are often obligatory. Expansion of the tissues of the dorsum of the hand offers an effective and relatively simple approach to generate the excess skin needed.

The aim of this study was to examine the effect of ingestion of a glucose polymer drink on fluid and metabolic balance during a 30 km outdoor march in the heat (ambient temperature, 26-31 degrees C; relative humidity, 53-34%). The subjects were randomly assigned to one of three groups: 7.2% glucose polymer-electrolyte beverage (GP) (N = 16), flavored sweetened placebo drink (SP) (N = 15), and tap water (TW) (N = 18).

A 36-year-old man was treated by radiotherapy for tinea capitis many years before discovery of microcystic adnexal carcinoma (MAC). Because of patient's refusal of any surgical intervention, we were able to follow the natural course of this tumor for 13 years. This case emphasizes the typical slow development of (MAC).

Our data demonstrate the high incidence of combined pregnancy among patients who have undergone IVF. Close monitoring of pregnancies in IVF programs may prevent a possibly deleterious delay in the treatment of simultaneous ectopic and intrauterine gestation.

Gait capacity, operative intervention, and complications of operation were evaluated in 20 patients with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). Thirty-two Bailey-Dubow (B-D) rods and 24 nonelongating rods were used. Postoperatively, gait capacity improved in eight patients, regressed in three, and remained unchanged in nine.
