A scoping review of the effectiveness of underwater treadmill exercise in clinical trials of chronic pain.

Objective: The objective of this scoping review was to investigate the available literature on physical and quality of life (QoL) outcomes of underwater treadmill exercise trials in clinical chronic pain samples.

Methods: A scoping search of studies of the effectiveness of underwater treadmill exercise trials from 1947 to 2024 was conducted using the following databases: EMBASE, MEDLINE, SPORTDiscus, CINAHL, and Cochrane Reviews. To be included, studies were required to have included adult participants living with chronic pain (defined as pain lasting for 3 months or longer) who participated in an active underwater treadmill exercise intervention.

A self-assembled, charge-neutral dicopper(II) metallo-macrocycle with a near degenerate singlet-triplet ground state is a prototype molecular two-qubit system. The weakly-coupled spin centres delivered a long phase memory time of 5.4 μs, and each spin can be selectively switched using an applied potential providing a convenient means to modulate the quantum levels.

PET/CT-derived coronary calcium score may predict cardiac complications in anthracycline-treated lymphoma patients.

Anthracycline-mediated cardiotoxicity is a common concern following lymphoma therapy, particularly in patients with high cardiovascular risk (CVR). In non-cancer populations, coronary artery calcium scoring (CACS) effectively identifies individuals who may benefit from aggressive CVR modification to lower the risk of cardiovascular events. Emerging evidence suggests that CACS can also predict cancer therapy-related cardiotoxicity, potentially identifying candidates for cardioprotective strategies.

Background: The Australian National Perinatal Data Collection collates all live and stillbirths from States and Territories in Australia. In that database, maternal cigarette smoking is noted twice (smoking <20 weeks gestation; smoking >20 weeks gestation). Cannabis use and other forms of nicotine use, for example vaping and nicotine replacement therapy, are nor reported.

Perceptions of Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants/Associates Toward the Concept of Developing an Advanced Practice Postgraduate Residency/Fellowship Program at a Large Academic Medical Center.

Introduction There have been exponential growth and increased interest in postgraduate residency/fellowship formalized training among nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants/associates (PAs). Although not a requirement for state licensure and entry-level practice, postgraduate NP and PA residency/fellowship programs offer a structured pathway for new graduates and experienced PAs and NPs looking to transition into a new medical or surgical specialty/subspecialty. In this article, we examine the perceptions of employed NPs and PAs toward postgraduate training including the concept of developing a program at our institution.

The study of transcription factors that determine specialized neuronal functions has provided invaluable insights into the physiology of the nervous system. Peripheral chemoreceptors are neurone-like electrophysiologically excitable cells that link the oxygen concentration of arterial blood to the neuronal control of breathing. In the adult, this oxygen chemosensitivity is exemplified by type I cells of the carotid body, and recent work has revealed one isoform of the hypoxia-inducible transcription factor (HIF), HIF-2α, as having a nonredundant role in the development and function of that organ.

Mutagenesis on a complex mouse genetic background by site-specific nucleases.

Mouse models with complex genetic backgrounds are increasingly used in preclinical research to accurately model human disease and to enable temporal and cell-specific evaluation of genetic manipulations. Backcrossing mice onto these complex genetic backgrounds takes time and leads to significant wastage of animals. In this study, we aimed to evaluate whether site-specific nucleases could be used to generate additional genetic mutations in a complex genetic background, using the REVERSA mouse model of atherosclerosis, a model harbouring four genetically altered alleles.

Sinusoidal obstruction syndrome/veno-occlusive disease (SOS/VOD) is a life-threatening complication which can develop after haemopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and some antibody-drug conjugates. Several SOS/VOD diagnostic and management guidelines exist, with the most recent and refined being the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation adult and paediatric guidelines. Timely diagnosis and effective management (including the availability of therapeutic options) significantly contribute to improved patient outcomes.

Oral health inequalities in immigrant populations worldwide: a scoping review of dental caries and periodontal disease prevalence.

Background: Inequalities in immigrants' oral health are often masked in population-level data. Therefore, this paper was planned to assess the prevalence data on oral health diseases, namely dental caries, and periodontitis, among immigrants worldwide.

Methods: Following a systematic search in Scopus, Embase, and PubMed for studies published between 2011 and 2023, 1342 records were identified.

Background: Folate intake during pregnancy is essential for fetal development and maternal health. However, the specific effects of folic acid (FA) and 5-methyl-(6S)-tetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) on the prevention and treatment of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy remain unclear. We investigated whether FA and 5-MTHF have different effects on endothelial cell tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) metabolism in pregnancy and the possible consequences for endothelial NO generation, maternal blood pressure, and fetal growth.

Foot orientation and trajectory variability in locomotion: Effects of real-world terrain.

Capturing human locomotion in nearly any environment or context is becoming increasingly feasible with wearable sensors, giving access to commonly encountered walking conditions. While important in expanding our understanding of locomotor biomechanics, these more variable environments present challenges to identify changes in data due to person-level factors among the varying environment-level factors. Our study examined foot-specific biomechanics while walking on terrain commonly encountered with the goal of understanding the extent to which these variables change due to terrain.

Immune system dysregulation preceding a case of laboratory-confirmed zoster/dermatitis on board the International Space Station.

A case report detailing, for the first time, a case of laboratory-confirmed zoster in an astronaut on board the International Space Station is presented. The findings of reduced T-cell function, cytokine imbalance, and increased stress hormones which preceded the event are detailed. Relevance for deep space countermeasures is discussed.

Voluntary exercise preserves visual function and reduces inflammatory response in an adult mouse model of autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa.

Whole-body physical exercise has been shown to promote retinal structure and function preservation in animal models of retinal degeneration. It is currently unknown how exercise modulates retinal inflammatory responses. In this study, we investigated cytokine alterations associated with retinal neuroprotection induced by voluntary running wheel exercise in a retinal degeneration mouse model of class B1 autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa, I307N Rho.

Sequential hydrotalcite precipitation, microbial sulfate reduction and in situ hydrogen sulfide removal for neutral mine drainage treatment.

This study proposed and examined a new process flowsheet for treating neutral mine drainage (NMD) from an open-pit gold mine. The process consisted of three sequential stages: (1) in situ hydrotalcite (HT) precipitation; (2) low-cost carbon substrate driven microbial sulfate reduction; and (3) ferrosol reactive barrier for removing biogenic dissolved hydrogen sulfide (HS). For concept validation, laboratory-scale columns were established and operated for a 140-days period with key process performance parameters regularly measured.

A scoping review of dental practitioners' perspectives on perceived barriers and facilitators to preventive oral health care in general dental practice.

Background: Oral health has an important role in the general health and well-being of individuals. Dental teams are ideally placed to support patients in preventing ill-health. Understanding the barriers and facilitators to the adoption, promotion and facilitation of preventive advice and treatment is key to improving oral health services.

A long-standing question is to what degree genetic drift and selection drive the divergence in rare accessory gene content between closely related bacteria. Rare genes, including singletons, make up a large proportion of pangenomes (all genes in a set of genomes), but it remains unclear how many such genes are adaptive, deleterious or neutral to their host genome. Estimates of species' effective population sizes (N) are positively associated with pangenome size and fluidity, which has independently been interpreted as evidence for both neutral and adaptive pangenome models.
