Botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs) rank among the most potent toxins and many of them are produced by bacteria carrying the orfX gene cluster that also encodes four nontoxic proteins (OrfX1, OrfX2, OrfX3 and P47). The orfX gene cluster is also found in the genomes of many non-BoNT-producing bacteria, often alongside genes encoding oral insecticidal toxins. However, the functions of these OrfXs and P47 remain elusive.

Background: While several studies in cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) focus on cognitive function, data on neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) and lifelong mental activities in these patients are scarce. Since NPS are associated with functional impairment, faster cognitive decline and faster progression to death, replication studies in more diverse settings and samples are warranted.

Methods: We prospectively recruited n = 69 CAA patients and n = 18 cognitively normal controls (NC).

Biochar as ammonia exchange biofilm carrier for enhanced aerobic nitrification in activated sludge.

The effects of biochar on aerobic nitrification in activated sludge were investigated in sequencing batch reactors. Biochar amended reactors exhibited 87-94 % lower ammonia in effluent and 16-71 % greater removal of total Kjeldahl nitrogen compared to control reactors. Quantitative qPCR analyses revealed that the relative abundance of ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB, amoA/16S rRNA genes) was greater in biochar than in control reactors.

In March 2023, 34 associated cases of iatrogenic botulism were detected in Germany (30 cases), Switzerland (two cases), Austria (one case), and France (one case). First cross-border outbreak of foodborne botulism in the European Union associated with the consumption of commercial dried roach ().

Botulism outbreaks due to commercial products are extremely rare in the European Union. Here we report on the first international outbreak of foodborne botulism caused by commercial salt-cured, dried roach (). Between November and December 2016, an outbreak of six foodborne botulism type E cases from five unrelated households was documented in Germany and Spain.
