Tobacco Retail Sales in Massachusetts and New Hampshire Before and After Massachusetts' Flavored Tobacco Restriction.

In June 2020, Massachusetts became the first state to implement a comprehensive flavored tobacco restriction. One concern was that Massachusetts residents would travel to New Hampshire to purchase restricted products. This article assesses tobacco sales in both states post-law implementation.

Work Intensity of Postoperative Care Following Implantation of Presbyopia-Correcting versus Monofocal Intraocular Lenses.

Purpose: To compare the work intensity of postoperative care following implantation of presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses (IOLs) to that of standard monofocal IOLs.

Patients And Methods: This open-label, multicenter, comparative study retrospectively reviewed the case records of cataract surgery patients who underwent bilateral implantation of either presbyopia-correcting IOLs (presby-IOL group; N=177) or standard monofocal IOLs (monofocal group; N=177). Outcome measures included the total time the patient spent in the office, number of visits, mean duration of visits, and the number of procedures and diagnostic tests during the first postoperative year.

Evaluation of a Statewide Flavored Tobacco Restriction on Use, Access, and Cessation Among Black and White Tobacco Users in Massachusetts.

Purpose: To evaluate the impact of a statewide flavored tobacco restriction among Massachusetts residents who use menthol or flavored tobacco and to assess differences in impact between Black and White users, as the tobacco industry has targeted menthol to Black users.

Design: An online survey was distributed through a panel provider and household mailings.

Setting: Eleven Massachusetts communities with higher-than-state-average Black, Indigenous or People of Color populations.

Smoke-Free Policies and Resident Turnover: An Evaluation in Massachusetts Public Housing From 2009‒2018.

Introduction: Smoke-free policies (SFP) in multi-unit housing are a promising tool for reducing exposure to tobacco smoke among residents. Concerns about increased housing instability due to voluntary or involuntary transitions induced by SFPs have been a primary barrier to greater widespread adoption. The impact of SFP implementation on transitions out of public housing in federally funded public housing authorities in Massachusetts was evaluated.

Implementation Activities in Smoke-Free Public Housing: The Massachusetts Experience.

A 2018 rule requiring federally-subsidized public housing authorities (PHAs) in the United States to adopt smoke-free policies (SFPs) has sparked interest in how housing agencies can best implement SFPs. However, to date, there is little quantitative data on the implementation of SFPs in public housing. Massachusetts PHAs were among the pioneers of SFPs in public housing, and many had instituted SFPs voluntarily prior to the federal rule.

In June 2020, Massachusetts implemented a first in the nation statewide law that restricts sales of menthol and other flavored tobacco. Since implementation, sales data indicate high retailer compliance. Drastic decreases were seen in sales of all flavored tobacco.

Progressive Pulmonary Fibrosis After Non-Critical COVID-19: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND The COVID-19 global pandemic is ongoing, and despite vaccination efforts, SARS-CoV-2 continues to circulate worldwide. The spectrum of COVID-19 illness is broad, from asymptomatic infection to respiratory failure and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and the long-term sequelae of infection are unclear. COVID-19-related pulmonary fibrosis has been previously described in the setting of critical illness and ARDS but has not been well described in cases requiring minimal supplemental oxygen.

Unattended automated office blood pressure measurement: Time efficiency and barriers to implementation/utilization.

Unattended automated office blood pressure (BP) measurement (u-AOBP) improves office BP measurement accuracy and reduces white-coat BP elevation, but there are reservations about its time efficiency in primary care. We used time-stamp methodology to measure u-AOBP procedure times performed without a rest period in 130 patients during routine clinic visits to three primary care clinics with 2.5-4.

Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE) is a relatively new one-step refractive procedure that has recently been approved by the FDA for the treatment of myopia. It is anticipated myopic astigmatism will be FDA-approved in 2019. The SMILE procedure is shown to have similar efficacy, safety, predictability, and stability as current surgical options, such as LASIK, but has been gaining popularity due to fewer potential complications, such as dry eye incidence and greater biomechanical stability, and faster recovery time.

Measuring and Managing Blood Pressure in a Primary Care Setting: A Pragmatic Implementation Study.

Background: Accurate blood pressure (BP) measurement is essential to hypertension diagnosis and management. Automated office blood pressure (AOBP) and home blood pressure measurement (HBPM) may improve assessment, but barriers exist in primary care settings.

Methods: We implemented an AOBP/HBPM program in a primary care clinic in 2015 to 2016.

Evaluation of low-frequency operational limit of proposed ITER low-field-side reflectometer waveguide run including miter bends.

The present design concept for the ITER low-field-side reflectometer transmission line (TL) consists of an ∼40 m long, 6.35 cm diameter helically corrugated waveguide (WG) together with ten 90° miter bends. This paper presents an evaluation of the TL performance at low frequencies (33-50 GHz) where the predicted HE mode ohmic and mode conversion losses start to increase significantly.

ETV4 and AP1 Transcription Factors Form Multivalent Interactions with three Sites on the MED25 Activator-Interacting Domain.

The recruitment of transcriptional cofactors by sequence-specific transcription factors challenges the basis of high affinity and selective interactions. Extending previous studies that the N-terminal activation domain (AD) of ETV5 interacts with Mediator subunit 25 (MED25), we establish that similar, aromatic-rich motifs located both in the AD and in the DNA-binding domain (DBD) of the related ETS factor ETV4 interact with MED25. These ETV4 regions bind MED25 independently, display distinct kinetics, and combine to contribute to a high-affinity interaction of full-length ETV4 with MED25.

Structured and disordered regions cooperatively mediate DNA-binding autoinhibition of ETS factors ETV1, ETV4 and ETV5.

Autoinhibition enables spatial and temporal regulation of cellular processes by coupling protein activity to surrounding conditions, often via protein partnerships or signaling pathways. We report the molecular basis of DNA-binding autoinhibition of ETS transcription factors ETV1, ETV4 and ETV5, which are often overexpressed in prostate cancer. Inhibitory elements that cooperate to repress DNA binding were identified in regions N- and C-terminal of the ETS domain.

Generalized Multinucleate Cell Angiohistiocytoma.

Background: There are less than 100 cases of multinucleate cell angiohistiocytoma (MCA) currently reported in the literature. It occurs as a localized, asymptomatic, benign proliferation of the skin, characterized histologically by irregular multinucleate cells. Due to its novelty, the etiology of the disease and treatment options are still under investigation.

Visual hallucinations related to angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor use: case reports and review.

Four patients experienced visual hallucinations that appear to have been precipitated by lisinopril. Other cases of visual hallucinations have been reported with other angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. Older patients, particularly those with a history of either dementia or mild cognitive impairment, may be at higher risk.

This is the first literature report of a series of Zeiss iScription process wave guided spectacles (glasses) compared with conventional non-wave guided glasses. We designed a prospective pilot study of our initial clinical experience. Fifty patients with wavefront and fifty non-wavefront glasses were compared for lens changes made for comfort or visual clarity after initial manufacture and fitting.

The effects of external acoustic pressure fields on a free-running supercavitating projectile.

Proliferation of supercavitating torpedoes has motivated research on countermeasures against them as well as on the fluid phenomenon which makes them possible. The goal of this research was to investigate an envisaged countermeasure, an acoustic field capable of slowing or diverting the weapon by disrupting the cavitation envelope. The research focused on the interactions between high pressure amplitude sound waves and a supercavity produced by a small free-flying projectile.

Abatacept and serious respiratory infections in patients with previous lung disease.

Abatacept is a biologic agent used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, for which underlying chronic obstructive lung disease is listed as a precaution to its use due to concern for increased risk of respiratory adverse events. We describe two cases of severe respiratory complications affecting rheumatoid arthritis patients undergoing treatment with abatacept who had been previously diagnosed with underlying lung disease.
