Purpose: Both fictional oral narrative and expository oral discourse skills are critical language competencies that support children's academic success. Few studies, however, have examined African American children's microstructure performance across these genres. To address this gap in the literature, the study compared African American children's microstructure productivity and complexity across three discourse contexts: fictional narratives, informational discourse, and procedural discourse.

Article Synopsis
  • The silverleaf whitefly is a major agricultural pest affecting crop yields globally, with limited research on insecticide effectiveness since the introduction of Mediterranean species in Brazil.
  • The study assessed the susceptibility of three Mediterranean whitefly populations to 11 different insecticides and analyzed their bacterial endosymbionts.
  • Results indicated significant variation in insecticide tolerance among populations, particularly with imidacloprid and thiamethoxam, emphasizing the need for regular toxicity testing and integrated pest management to maintain insecticide effectiveness.

An augmentative biological control program using the egg parasitoid Ashmead (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae) is a promising tool for the management of the brown stink bug, (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) in soybeans. The are released as adults or pupae within lab-reared eggs. Because of the small size of the parasitoid and potentially limited dispersal ability, determining the optimal release pattern is critical for biological control of the target pest.

Article Synopsis
  • * Whiteflies are problematic because they infest numerous crops, reproduce quickly, and can spread viruses; the main species in South America include several from the complex known as Middle East-Asia Minor 1, Mediterranean, and New World.
  • * The text reviews current research on whitefly management in South America, discussing their distribution and associated viruses, and providing management strategies that include cultural practices and control methods, while highlighting areas for future research.

This is a case report of a 73-year-old man with new-onset acute renal failure while being investigated for pulmonary infiltrates and mediastinal lymphadenopathies. Urine tests showed tubular range proteinuria with no microhaematuria. Immunology tests showed elevated serum IgG and hypocomplementaemia (classical pathway activation).

The mechanisms that drive the normal resolution of acute postoperative pain are not completely understood. We hypothesize a pivotal role of a major spinal mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPKs) regulator, MAPK phosphatase (MKP)-3, in the resolution of postoperative pain. We used wild-type and MKP-3 knock-out (KO) mice, a paw incision model of acute postoperative pain, and behavioral and molecular biology experiments.

In paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM), the primary lung infection remains silent. In this study, attempts were done to define the primary target organ by correlating lung radiographic abnormalities with the time course of mucosal/skin lesions concurrently exhibited at diagnosis by 63 patients in whom microscopy and/or isolation of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis from respiratory secretions had been positive. Mucosal and skin lesions were found in 65.

Itraconazole effectively controls active paracoccidioidomycosis but appears not to hinder lung fibrosis. Clinical records and chest radiographs from 47 itraconazole-treated patients with prolonged posttherapy follow-up (mean follow-up period, 5.6 years) were analyzed; the radiographs were interpreted following pneumoconiosis standards that consider the lungs as 6 fields and grade damage according to the number of fields involved.

Purpose: Reports have shown that photorefractive keratectomy changes intraocular pressure (IOP) in myopic eyes by changing the thickness and curvature of the cornea. Changes in intraocular pressure after laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) for hyperopia led the authors to evaluate IOP after LASIK for various refractive errors.

Methods: The measurement of intraocular pressure with a Goldman applanometer in the central cornea was evaluated before and 3 months after LASIK in 100 eyes of 55 patients with various refractive errors.

Results of a search for small-scale anisotropy in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) are presented. Observations were made at the South Pole using the Viper telescope, with a 0&fdg;26 (FWHM) beam and a passband centered at 40 GHz. Anisotropy band-power measurements in bands spanning the range of l in which the first acoustic peak is expected (bands centered at l=108, 173, 237, 263, 422, and 589) are reported.
