Virus neutralization profiles against primary infection sera and corresponding antigenic cartography are integral part of the COVID-19 and influenza vaccine strain selection processes. Human single variant exposure sera have previously defined the antigenic relationships among SARS-CoV-2 variants but are now largely unavailable due to widespread population immunity. Whether depression and poor sleep interact or have statistically independent associations with brain structure and its change over time is not known. Within a subset of UK Biobank participants with neuroimaging and subjective and/or objective sleep data (n = 28,351), we examined associations between lifetime depression and sleep disruption, and their interaction with structural neuroimaging measures, both cross-sectionally and longitudinally. Sleep variables were: self-reported insomnia and difficulty getting up; actigraphy-derived short sleep (<7 h); sustained inactivity bouts during daytime (SIBD); and sleep efficiency.

To identify genes involved in regulating the behavioral and brain transcriptomic response to the potentially addictive drug cocaine, we performed genome-wide association studies (GWASs) for intravenous self-administration of cocaine or saline (as a control) over 10 days using a panel of inbred and recombinant inbred mice. A linear mixed model increased statistical power for these longitudinal data and identified 145 loci for responding when saline only was delivered, compared to 17 for the corresponding cocaine GWAS. Only one locus overlapped.

For this narrative review, we describe recent high-profile and severe outbreaks of emerging fungal infections, emphasizing lessons learned and opportunities to improve future prevention and response efforts. Several themes and challenges remain consistent across a diverse array of fungal outbreaks, including the multidisciplinary need for improved diagnostic testing to determine species and perform antifungal susceptibility testing, clinical awareness, and optimization of antifungal use. Recent outbreaks exemplify the growing promise of non-culture-based tools in identifying fungal outbreaks and improving responses, although access remains limited.

Indium selenide, InSe, has recently attracted growing interest due to its remarkable properties, including room temperature ferroelectricity, outstanding photoresponsivity, and exotic in-plane ferroelectricity, which open up new regimes for next generation electronics. InSe also provides the important advantage of tuning the electrical properties of ultrathin layers with an external electrical and magnetic field, making it a potential platform to study novel two-dimensional physics. Chromoblastomycosis, an implantation mycosis, is a neglected tropical disease that causes decreased quality of life, stigma, and disability. The global burden of disease is unknown and data on disease epidemiology and outcomes are severely limited by a lack of access to needed diagnostic tools and therapeutics. The World Health Organization outlined targets for chromoblastomycosis in the Road Map for Neglected Tropical Diseases 2021-2030, but little progress has been made in initiating and implementing an effective control program globally.

The transcriptional interplay of human RNA polymerase I (RNA Pol I), RNA Pol II, and RNA Pol III remains largely uncharacterized due to limited integrative genomic analyses for all three enzymes. To address this gap, we applied a uniform framework to quantify global RNA Pol I, RNA Pol II, and RNA Pol III occupancies and identify both canonical and noncanonical patterns of gene localization. Most notably, our survey captures unexpected RNA Pol III recruitment at promoters of specific protein-coding genes.

Conspecific density dependence (CDD) in plant populations is widespread, most likely caused by local-scale biotic interactions, and has potentially important implications for biodiversity, community composition, and ecosystem processes. However, progress in this important area of ecology has been hindered by differing viewpoints on CDD across subfields in ecology, lack of synthesis across CDD-related frameworks, and misunderstandings about how empirical measurements of local CDD fit within the context of broader ecological theories on community assembly and diversity maintenance. Here, we propose a conceptual synthesis of local-scale CDD and its causes, including species-specific antagonistic and mutualistic interactions.

To explore associations between histoplasmosis and race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and rurality, we conducted an in-depth analysis of social determinants of health and histoplasmosis in 8 US states. Using the Minority Health Social Vulnerability Index (MH SVI), we analyzed county-level histoplasmosis incidence (cases/100,000 population) from the 8 states by applying generalized linear mixed hurdle models. We found that histoplasmosis incidence was higher in counties with limited healthcare infrastructure and access as measured by the MH SVI and in more rural counties.

Introduction: The complex encompasses a group of gram-negative opportunistic pathogens that cause chronic lung infections in people with cystic fibrosis. Distinct from other respiratory pathogens, causes a unique clinical disease in a subset of patients known as 'cepacia syndrome', fulminant pneumonia accompanied by bacteraemia and sepsis with a mortality rate of up to 75%. Due to the bacteraemia associated with this disease, the mechanisms that allow to resist the bactericidal effects of serum complement-depending killing are vital.
