Anti-inflammatory action of Cudrania tricuspidata on spleen cell and T lymphocyte proliferation.

This study examined whether an extract of Cudrania tricuspidata shows anti-proliferative effects in anti-CD3/CD28-mediated spleen and CD4+CD25- T cells and decreases the production of the proinflammatory cytokines interleukin-2 (IL-2) and interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) in anti-CD3/CD28-mediated CD4+CD25- T cells. The proliferation of anti-CD3/CD28-mediated spleen cells and CD4+CD25- T cells was effectively suppressed by C. tricuspidata.

A controllable double-well magneto-optical trap for Rb and Cs atoms.

We experimentally demonstrate a novel scheme to simultaneously confine two atomic species of (87)Rb and (133)Cs with adjustable spatial separation by a controllable double-well magneto-optic trap. Using a single-loop wire and a magnetic bias field, the two clouds, each containing more than 1 x 10(6) atoms, are spatially separated above and below the wire center of the double-well MOT. The cloud interdistance can be controlled by independently varying the wire current and external bias field.

Comparative analysis of clinical outcomes for laparoscopic distal pancreatic resection and open distal pancreatic resection at a single institution.

Background: Despite recent advances in laparoscopic pancreatic surgery, few studies have compared laparoscopic distal pancreatic resection (LDPR) with open distal pancreatic resection (ODPR). This study aimed to compare clinical outcomes for LDPR and ODPR performed at a single institution.

Methods: For this study, 93 patients with benign pancreatic disease underwent LDPR, and 35 patients with benign pancreatic disease underwent ODPR.

The experience of pregnancy after renal transplantation: pregnancies even within postoperative 1 year may be tolerable.

Background: To identify factors related with successful pregnancy in renal transplant recipients and the effect of pregnancy on long-term graft outcome.

Methods: The study group consisted of 48 women who conceived after undergoing renal transplantation (total pregnancies 74). The control group consisted of 187 nonpregnant female renal transplant recipients.

The prognostic factors of pancreatic cancer can be different according to clinical stages.

Background/aims: The prognosis of patients with pancreatic cancer remains very poor. Although many studies have evaluated the prognostic factors of pancreatic cancer, their results are inconclusive because of different inclusion criteria, tumor stages, and treatment modalities. This large scale retrospective analysis was performed to assess whether active treatment of pancreatic cancer, even in its advanced stage, could improve patients' survival.

alpha-Melanocyte stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) has been shown to inhibit the production and the effects of pro-inflammatory cytokine by inflammatory cells in innate immunity. We have determined whether alpha-MSH inhibits anti-CD3/CD28-mediated spleen cells and CD4(+)CD25(-) T cells proliferation and its mechanism of action. The proliferation of anti-CD3/CD28-mediated spleen cells and CD4(+)CD25(-) T cells markedly were suppressed by 50-100 nM and 5-100 nM alpha-MSH, respectively.

Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm of the pancreas: clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes of 118 consecutive patients from a single center.

Background/purpose: Appropriate surgical treatment strategies based on clinicopathological findings are unavailable for intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) of the pancreas. We investigated the clinical features of pancreatic IPMN in a single-center database in order to design an optimal surgical strategy.

Methods: The medical records of 118 consecutive patients who had undergone surgical resection between August 1994 and December 2004, in whom IPMN was histologically confirmed, were reviewed retrospectively for radiological and pathological findings.

Effect of immunosuppressants on the expansion and function of naturally occurring regulatory T cells.

The induction of immune tolerance is one of the final therapeutic goals in clinical transplantation. Regulatory T lymphocytes are important for the induction and maintenance of immune tolerance to grafts. If immunosuppressive drugs used clinically to prevent immune rejection also inhibit regulatory T lymphocytes, tolerance would not be achieved.

Risk factors for MDRD-GFR of less than 60 mL/min per 1.73 m2 in former kidney donors.

Background: Although several previous studies have reported that kidney donors are not at increased risk for adverse effects, some donors have been found to progress to chronic kidney disease (CKD). We retrospectively evaluated the risk factors for estimated glomerular filtration rate (GFR) from abbreviated Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) equation (MDRD-GFR) of less than 60 mL/min per 1.73 m2 in kidney donors.

Radical surgical resection for carcinoid tumors of the ampulla.

Ampullary carcinoid tumors are extremely rare. The present study describes the clinicopathological features and outcomes for 10 ampullary carcinoid patients who underwent radical resection from 1998 to 2005. During this study period, 294 patients underwent pancreatoduodenectomy for ampullary neoplasms in our institution.

Treatment guidelines for branch duct type intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms of the pancreas: when can we operate or observe?

Background: The objectives of this study were to investigate the clinicopathological features of branch intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) and to determine safe criteria for its observation. Most clinicians agree that surgical resection is required to treat main duct-type IPMN because of its high malignancy rate. However, no definite treatment guideline (with respect to surgery or observation) has been issued on the management of branch duct type IPMN.

Protective effect of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone on pancreas islet cell against peripheral blood mononuclear cell-mediated cytotoxicity in vitro.

The alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) has been shown to interact with various cells of the immune and inflammatory systems and down-regulate either the production or the action of proinflammatory cytokines. In this study, we investigated the potential of alpha-MSH to prevent pancreatic islet cells from cytotoxic injury by inflammatory cytokines released from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in rats. Pancreatic islets were cocultured with PBMCs in a transwell system during stimulation by phorbol myristic acid and ionomycin.

Outcome of multipair donor kidney exchange by a web-based algorithm.

Donor kidney exchange is an established method to overcome incompatibility of donor-recipient pairs (DRP). A computerized algorithm was devised to exchange donor kidney and was tested in a multicenter setting. The algorithm was made according to the consensus of participating centers.

SMARCB1/INI1 missense mutation in mucinous carcinoma with rhabdoid features.

Malignant rhabdoid tumor (MRT) is a rare and aggressive tumor associated with deletion or mutation of a tumor suppressor gene SMARCB1/INI1, a member of the SWI/SNF chromatin-remodeling complex. Reported herein is a case of pancreatic mucinous carcinoma accompanying rhabdoid features with immunohistochemical and ultrastructural studies as well as analysis of the SMARCB1/INI1 gene. A 65-year-old woman presented with a 2 month history of abdominal and chest pain.

Regulation of insulin secretion and beta-cell mass by activating signal cointegrator 2.

Activating signal cointegrator 2 (ASC-2) is a transcriptional coactivator of many nuclear receptors (NRs) and other transcription factors and contains two NR-interacting LXXLL motifs (NR boxes). In the pancreas, ASC-2 is expressed only in the endocrine cells of the islets of Langerhans, but not in the exocrine cells. Thus, we examined the potential role of ASC-2 in insulin secretion from pancreatic beta-cells.

[Molecular basic of interaction between disease resistance gene and avirulence gene].

Plant-pathogen interaction is the more important phytopathological subjects. Landmark progress in the past 10 years have resulted in the identification of functional R genes from the host and Avr genes from the pathogen,additionally interaction between their encoded productions. This paper reviewed the two models of R-Avr interaction, namely "receptor-ligand model" and "guard model", and discussed how to utilize the R gene during crop breeding and commercial production.

Influence of mismatching of HLA cross-reactive groups on cadaveric kidney transplantation.

Finding fully HLA-matched recipients for a given donor is not practical due to the allelic diversity of the loci. Cross-reactive group (CREG) matching has been considered a feasible alternative to HLA matching. However, the true efficacy of CREG matching in cadaveric kidney transplantation is controversial.

Comparative study on biologic and immunologic characteristics of the pancreas islet cell between 24 degrees C and 37 degrees C culture in the rat.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of culture at 24 degrees C on cell viability, cellular function, immunogenicity, and cytokine profiles of rat pancreatic islets. Pancreatic islets were isolated from Lewis rats and cultured at either 24 degrees C or 37 degrees C for 14 days. Islet recovery was counted as islet equivalents; islet viability was examined with fluorescent vital staining.

Analysis on donor and isolation-related factors of successful isolation of human islet of Langerhans from human cadaveric donors.

We analyzed the preexisting donor factors and isolation variables that affected isolation of human islets of Langerhans. Sixty-nine pancreata from cadaveric donors were analyzed for donor factors of age, gender, body mass index, cause of death as well as graft factors of cold ischemia time, pancreas status, distensibility during intraductal collagenase distension and time of collagenase expansion and digestion. Islet isolations that recovered >100,000 IEQ (n = 53) were compared to those generating less than 100,000 IEQ (n = 16) to analyze the factors affecting islet yield during donor harvest and isolation procedures.

An inexact fuzzy two-stage stochastic model for quantifying the efficiency of nonpoint source effluent trading under uncertainty.

Reduction of nonpoint source (NPS) pollution from agricultural lands is a major concern in most countries. One method to reduce NPS pollution is through land retirement programs. This method, however, may result in enormous economic costs especially when large sums of croplands need to be retired.

[Analyses of Pont Index of dental crowding patients and normal occlusion people].

Objective: The research aimed to analyze the significance of Pont Index in the dental crowding.

Methods: Respectively selected 91 normal occlusion persons and 101 dental crowding patients, measured every item of Pont Index of these two sample groups, and compared the results.

Results: The premolar index and molar index of dental crowding patients were obviously bigger than that of normal occlusion, and there was apparent significant difference.

Decision-related factors and attitudes toward donation in living related liver transplantation: ten-year experience.

Introduction: Living related liver transplantation (LRLT) has been performed since 1994 in Korea; more than 600 donors have contributed to our successful LRLT program for 10 years. Although the decision to donate is difficult and the donors need a formal psychosocial assessment, no system has been available to us for the assessment. This survey was performed as a presurveillance for the development of a psychosocial assessment protocol.

Multicenter analysis of clinicopathologic features of intraductal papillary mucinous tumor of the pancreas: is it possible to predict the malignancy before surgery?

Background: Despite recently increasing numbers of reports on intraductal papillary mucinous tumors (IPMTs), difficulties still remain in terms of diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. The purpose of this multicenter study was to evaluate the clinicopathologic features of IPMT in Korea and to suggest predictive criteria for malignancy in IPMT.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the clinicopathologic data of 208 patients who underwent operations for IPMT between 1993 and 2002 at 28 institutes in Korea.
