Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is a debilitating condition characterized by the death of bone cells in the hip joint, resulting in profound disability. This condition has a significant global prevalence. Glucocorticoid (GC)-induced apoptosis of bone cells serves as a crucial cellular mechanism underlying ONFH.

Objective: Hypertension development and progression are largely influenced by inflammation, which plays a critical role by activating the immune system and causing damage to the vascular endothelium. Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is also associated with chronic low-grade inflammation, which drives disease progression via metabolic imbalances and adipose tissue dysfunction. This study investigates the relationship between inflammatory indices and MAFLD in hypertensive patients and assesses the predictive accuracy of these indices for MAFLD.

Background: The influence of serum uric acid (SUA) on bone metabolism, as suggested by previous studies, remains a contentious issue. SUA plays a complex role in bone health and hypertension, making it challenging to discern its impact on the skeletal status of middle-aged and elderly hypertensive patients. This study aims to elucidate the effects of SUA on bone health, with a particular focus on its association with osteoporosis and the risk of fractures.

Enhancing the activity and CO poisoning resistance of Pt-based catalysts for the anodic hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) poses a significant challenge in the development of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Herein, we leverage theoretical calculations to demonstrate that tungsten nitride (WN) can intricately modulate the electronic structure of Pt. This modulation optimizes the hydrogen adsorption, significantly boosting HOR activity, and simultaneously weakens the CO adsorption, markedly improving resistance to CO poisoning.

The objective of this study was to ascertain the relationship between the weight-adjusted waist index (WWI) and the risk of stroke in an elderly hypertensive population, a relationship that has not been previously elucidated. The Cox regression model was employed to assess the correlation between baseline WWI measurements and the incidence of stroke. To further elucidate the shape of the association between baseline WWI and stroke, restricted cubic splines were employed.

Objective: To explore the link between plasma aldosterone concentration (PAC) and the prevalence of metabolic dysfunction-related fatty liver disease (MAFLD) in hypertensive patients.

Methods: We analyzed data from 41,131 hospitalized patients from January 1, 2014, to December 31, 2023. Multivariate logistic regression models tested associations, with threshold, subgroup, and sensitivity analyses conducted to validate findings.

Modulating the electronic structure of catalysts to effectively couple the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential for developing high-efficiency anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE). Herein, a coral-like nanoarray composed of nanosheets through the synergistic layering effect of cobalt and the 1D guiding of vanadium is synthesized, which promotes extensive contact between the active sites and electrolyte. The HER and OER activities can be enhanced by modulating the electronic structure through nitridation and phosphorization, respectively, enhancing the strength of metal-H bond to optimize hydrogen adsorption and facilitating the proton transfer to improve the transformation of oxygen-containing intermediates.

Background: Prior research has highlighted the association between uric acid (UA) and the activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). However, the specific relationship between aldosterone, the RAAS's end product, and UA-related diseases remains poorly understood. This study aims to clarify the impact of aldosterone on the development and progression of hyperuricemia and gout in hypertensive patients.

Background: Protein misfolding and aggregation can lead to various diseases. Recent studies have shed light on the aggregated protein in breast cancer pathology, which suggests that it is crucial to design chemical sensors that visualize protein aggregates in breast cancer, especially in clinical patient-derived samples. However, most reported sensors are constrained in cultured cell lines.

Background: A newly introduced obesity-related index, the weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI), emerges as a promising predictor of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Given the known synergistic effects of hypertension and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) on cardiovascular risk, we aimed to explore the relationship between the WWI and CVD risk specifically within this high-risk cohort.

Methods: A total of 2265 participants with hypertension and OSA were included in the study.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the impact of spironolactone, an aldosterone antagonist, on bone health, specifically focusing on osteoporosis and fracture risk in middle-aged and elderly hypertensive patients.
  • Using propensity score matching and various regression analyses, the research found that spironolactone users had a significantly lower risk of developing osteoporosis compared to non-users, as evidenced by odds ratios indicating a reduced risk.
  • The findings suggest that spironolactone could have a beneficial effect on bone health, leading to recommendations for larger, more comprehensive studies to assess its long-term effects in hypertensive patients.

Background: Previous studies have suggested that aldosterone may play a major role in calcium-phosphorus homeostasis and bone metabolism. However, the relationship between plasma aldosterone concentrations (PAC) and bone mineral density (BMD) in middle-aged and elderly hypertensive patients remains unclear. Therefore, this study sought to investigate the relationship between PAC levels and BMD and explore PAC's potential impact on osteoporosis and future fracture risk in hypertensive patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a type of nerve damage often leading to neuropathic pain, but the processes behind it are not well understood.
  • A new series of sensors, AggStain and AggLink, have been developed for imaging and analyzing protein aggregation in neuronal cells affected by CIPN.
  • AggStain enhances fluorescence detection of aggregated proteins and AggLink captures and analyzes these proteins, revealing the extent of proteome aggregation and suggesting potential uses for evaluating cell stress.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored the link between systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI) and factors like bone mineral density (BMD), osteoporosis, and fracture risk in elderly hypertensive patients (aged 60 and above).
  • Results showed that higher SIRI levels correlated with lower BMD across various lumbar regions and the femur neck, indicating a negative impact on bone health.
  • Additionally, SIRI was associated with a greater risk of osteoporosis and future fractures, necessitating more research to validate these findings.

Approximately one-third of activated B-cell-like diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (ABC-DLBCL) cases were unresponsive to standard first-line therapy; thus, identifying biomarkers to evaluate therapeutic efficacy and assessing the emergence of drug resistance is crucial. Through early-stage screening, long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) X-inactive specific transcript (XIST) was found to be correlated with the R-CHOP treatment response. This study aimed to clarify the characteristics of XIST in ABC-DLBCL.
