Noninvasive evaluations of hormones can contribute to the assessment of health and welfare of animals. Variations in insulin levels and sensitivity, for example, have been linked to health concerns in non-human and human primates including insulin resistance, diabetes, and heart disease, the leading cause of death in zoo-housed gorillas. Few published studies have assessed insulin concentrations in western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla), and all did so using serum.

The controlled binding of proteins on nanoparticle surfaces remains a grand challenge required for many applications ranging from biomedical to energy storage. The difficulty in achieving this ability arises from the different functional groups of the biomolecule that can adsorb on the nanoparticle surface. While most proteins can only adopt a single structure, metamorphic proteins can access at least two different conformations, which presents intriguing opportunities to exploit such structural variations for binding to nanoparticles.

A poor maternal diet during pregnancy predisposes the infant to severe lower respiratory tract infections (sLRIs), which, in turn, increases childhood asthma risk; however, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we show that the offspring of high-fat diet (HFD)-fed mothers (HFD-reared pups) developed an sLRI following pneumovirus inoculation in early life and subsequent asthma in later life upon allergen exposure. Prior to infection, HFD-reared pups developed microbial dysbiosis and low-grade systemic inflammation (LGSI), characterized by hyperneutropoiesis in the liver and elevated inflammatory cytokine expression, most notably granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF), interleukin-17A (IL-17A), IL-6 and soluble IL-6 receptor (sIL-6R) (indicative of IL-6 trans-signaling) in the circulation and multiple organs but most prominently the liver.

Epigenetic measures of aging derived from DNA methylation are promising biomarkers associated with prospective morbidity and mortality, but require validation in real-world medical settings. Using data from 2,216 post-9/11 veterans, we examined whether accelerated DunedinPACE aging scores were associated with chronic disease morbidity, predicted healthcare costs, and mortality assessed over an average of 13.1 years of follow up in VA electronic health records.

Background: Palliative care improves the quality of life for people with life-limiting conditions, which are common among older adults. Despite the Veterans Health Administration (VA) outpatient palliative care expansion, most research has focused on inpatient palliative care. This study aimed to compare veteran characteristics and hospice use for palliative care users across care settings (inpatient vs.

Background: Time in healthcare facilities is associated with worse patient quality of life (QoL); however, impact on family caregiver QoL is unknown. We evaluate care recipient days not at home-days in the emergency department (ED), inpatient (IP) care, and post-acute care (PAC)-to understand how care recipient days not at home correspond to family caregiver QoL.

Methods: Secondary data were linked to care recipient utilization data.

Organofluorine compounds have been widely used as pharmaceuticals, agricultural pesticides, and water-resistant coatings for decades; however, these compounds are recognized as environmental pollutants. The capability of microorganisms and enzymes to defluorinate organofluorine compounds is both rare and highly desirable to facilitate environmental remediation efforts. Recently, a strain of (D4B) was identified with potential biodegradation activity toward perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and other organofluorine compounds.

Efforts to cure BCR::ABL1 B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph+ ALL) solely through inhibition of ABL1 kinase activity have thus far been insufficient despite the availability of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) with broad activity against resistance mutants. The mechanisms that drive persistence within minimal residual disease (MRD) remain poorly understood and therefore untargeted. Utilizing 13 patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models and clinical trial specimens of Ph+ ALL, we examined how genetic and transcriptional features co-evolve to drive progression during prolonged TKI response.

Objective: In a national cohort of Veterans, weight change was compared between participants in a US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) behavioral weight management program (MOVE!) and matched non-participants, and between high-intensity and low-intensity participants.

Methods: Retrospective cohort study of Veterans with 1 + MOVE! visits in 2008-2017 were matched to MOVE! non-participants via sequential stratification. Percent weight change up to two years after MOVE! initiation of participants and non-participants was modeled using generalized additive mixed models, and 1-year weight change of high-intensity or low-intensity participants was also compared.

We use AlphaFold2 (AF2) to model the monomer and dimer structures of an intrinsically disordered protein (IDP), Nvjp-1, assisted by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We observe relatively rigid dimeric structures of Nvjp-1 when compared with the monomer structures. We suggest that protein conformations from multiple AF2 models and those from MD trajectories exhibit a coherent trend: the conformations of an IDP are deviated from each other and the conformations of a well-folded protein are consistent with each other.

Background And Aims: Smoking is a risk factor for multiple sclerosis (MS) development, symptom burden, decreased medication efficacy, and increased disease-related mortality. Veterans with MS (VwMS) smoke at critically high rates; however, treatment rates and possible disparities are unknown. To promote equitable treatment, we aim to investigate smoking cessation prescription practices for VwMS across social determinant factors.

The prevalence of overweight and obesity among military personnel has increased substantially in the past two decades. Following military discharge many personnel can receive integrated health care from the Veterans Health Administration. Prior research related to the economic impacts of obesity has not examined health care costs following the transition into civilian life following military discharge.

Objective: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major cause of global illness and death, most commonly caused by cigarette smoke. The mechanisms of pathogenesis remain poorly understood, limiting the development of effective therapies. The gastrointestinal microbiome has been implicated in chronic lung diseases via the gut-lung axis, but its role is unclear.

Although allostatic load (AL) is a key concept to reflect physiologic wear and tear from stress, older adults are underrepresented in AL-related research, especially the oldest old (≥80). Further, attenuative factors are often unaccounted for. This longitudinal analysis using data from National Health and Aging Trends Study investigated relationships of AL in 2017 and multi-wave (1) comorbidity accumulation using multilevel Poisson modeling and (2) mortality risk using survival analysis.

Background: Antarctica and its unique biodiversity are increasingly at risk from the effects of global climate change and other human influences. A significant recent element underpinning strategies for Antarctic conservation has been the development of a system of Antarctic Conservation Biogeographic Regions (ACBRs). The datasets supporting this classification are, however, dominated by eukaryotic taxa, with contributions from the bacterial domain restricted to Actinomycetota and Cyanobacteriota.

The ability to sense and direct movement along chemical gradients is known as 'chemotaxis' and is a common trait among rhizosphere microorganisms, which are attracted to organic compounds released from plant roots. In response to stress, the compounds released from roots can change and may recruit symbionts that enhance host stress tolerance. Decoding this language of attraction could support the development of microbiome management strategies that would enhance agricultural production and sustainability.
