While ultrasound represents a facile, portable, and noninvasive trigger for drug delivery vehicles, most reported ultrasound-triggered drug delivery vehicles predominately present "burst" release profiles that are hard to control after the initial activation stimulus. Herein, we report a submerged electrospraying technique to fabricate protein-loaded microcapsules in which silica "corks" are embedded within the microcapsule shell. Upon the application of an ultrasound trigger, the corks can be perturbed within the shell, allowing for the release of the protein payload through a phantom tissue mimic to a degree proportional to the number/time of pulses applied.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major public health threat, reducing treatment options for infected patients. AMR is promoted by a lack of access to rapid antibiotic susceptibility tests (ASTs). Accelerated ASTs can identify effective antibiotics for treatment in a timely and informed manner.

With the objective to develop a potential Tc radiopharmaceutical for imaging the androgen receptor (AR) in prostate cancer, four ligands bearing the same pharmacophore derived from the AR antagonist flutamide were prepared, labeled with Tc, and their structures corroborated via comparison with the corresponding stable rhenium analogs. All complexes were obtained with high radiochemical purity. Three of the complexes were highly stable, and, due to their favorable physicochemical properties, were further evaluated using AR-positive and AR-negative cells in culture.

Objective: Although medical providers are a trusted vaccination information source for parents, they do not universally support vaccination. Complementary medicine (CM) providers are particularly likely to hold vaccine hesitant (VH) views, and VH parents often consult with them. Little research compares VH of parents and providers, and if and how each is associated with uptake of recommended childhood vaccines.

Background: The mental health of students in UK higher education (HE) is receiving increased attention, and support services for students are under increased pressure.

Aims: Drawing on ecological systems theory (EST), this study sought to explore possible contextual influences, over time, on student distress within HE.

Method And Samples: We conducted a two-stage Delphi study, first asking UK professionals (n = 236) from primary, secondary, further education, and HE to provide possible reasons for increases in student distress.

Article Synopsis
  • Anesthesiology in Chile is the first medical specialty to use an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) for certification, enhancing evaluation of practical skills.
  • The OSCE aims to assess competencies in real clinical scenarios that traditional written and oral exams may overlook.
  • The article details the implementation process of the OSCE in Anesthesiology certification and reviews its effectiveness after one year.

Developing high levels of competence in the execution of surgical procedures through training is a key factor for obtaining good clinical results in healthcare. To improve the effectiveness of the training, it is advisable to provide feedback to each student tailored to how the student has performed the procedure on each occasion. Current state-of-the-art feedback is based on Checklists and Global Rating Scales, which indicate whether all process steps have been carried out and the quality of each execution step.

Purpose: Safe perioperative care remains a large public healthcare problem in low- and middle-income countries. Anesthesia care provided by trained professionals is one of the essential determinants to address this situation. This article reports the design and implementation of a focused anesthesia educational program for nurses in Chad.

The emergency in international public health caused by the Zika virus gave rise to the discussion about abortion in cases of congenital Zika virus syndrome (CZS). Therefore, we propose to carry out a bibliographic review on abortion in these cases. Five databases were searched using the following terms: , , and , with the interposition of the Boolean operator "AND.

Introduction: The primary purpose of this study was to compare the effect of high fidelity simulation versus a computer-based case solving self-study, in skills acquisition about malignant hyperthermia on first year anesthesiology residents.

Methods: After institutional ethical committee approval, 31 first year anesthesiology residents were enrolled in this prospective randomized single-blinded study. Participants were randomized to either a High Fidelity Simulation Scenario or a computer-based Case Study about malignant hyperthermia.

Hemoderivative tear substitutes contain various ephiteliotrophic factors, such as growth factors (GF), involved in ocular surface homeostasis without immunogenic properties. The aim of the present work was the loading of platelet lysate into contact lenses to improve the precorneal permanence of platelet lysate growth factors on the ocular surface to enhance the treatment of corneal lesions. To this purpose, chondroitin sulfate, a sulfated glycosaminoglycan, which is normally present in the extracellular matrix, was associated with platelet lysate.

Rationale And Objectives: Radiology teachers are well trained in their specialty; however, when working in academic institutions, faculty development and promotion through the education pathway tends to be based on their teaching knowledge and skills. The aim of this study is to assess psychometric properties of the Medicina Universidad Católica-Radiology 32 items (MEDUC-RX32), an instrument designed to evaluate the performance of postgraduate radiology teachers and to identify the best teachers.

Materials And Methods: Mixed methodology was used, including qualitative and quantitative phases.

Background: Feedback is one of the most important tools to improve teaching in medical education.

Aim: To develop an instrument to assess the performance of clinical postgraduate teachers in medical specialties.

Material And Methods: A qualitative methodology consisting in interviews and focus-groups followed by a quantitative methodology to generate consensus, was employed.

Background: In 2007, a Clinical-Case-Portfolio (CCP) was introduced as a new assessment instrument for fourth grade undergraduate medical students. Since then, several changes have been implemented such as reduction on the number of clinical cases, peer review and the introduction of virtual patient to the portfolio.

Aim: To describe the virtual patient model incorporated to the CCP and assess the perception of this change and its effects on the performance of undergraduate students.

Intertemporal choices create a tension between amount maximization, which would favor the larger and later option (LL), and delay minimization, which would promote the smaller and sooner reward (SS). Two common interpretations of intertemporal choice behavior are discussed: looking at LL responses as indicative of self-control, and using intertemporal choices to assess delay aversion. We argue that both interpretations need to take into account motivational confounds, in order to be warranted by data.

Introduction: Aging is known to be a major contributing factor to the increased risk of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). With aging, breathing undergoes significant changes during sleep, increasing the prevalence of apnea events, which affects heart rate variability (HRV) and cardiorespiratory coupling (CRC).

Objectives: To compare HRV and CRC during wakefulness and sleep between young and elderly patients with and without OSA; and to determine whether the presence of OSA in young and elderly patients has a different impact on HRV and CRC during sleep.

In the Delay choice task subjects choose between a smaller immediate option and a larger delayed option. This paradigm, also known as intertemporal choice task, is frequently used to assess delay tolerance, interpreting a preference for the larger delayed option as willingness to wait. However, in the Delay choice task subjects face a dilemma between two preferred responses: "go for more" (i.

Rationale: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a respiratory disorder that has the potential to negatively impact heart rate variability (HRV) during the sleep cycle. However, it is uncertain whether there is a chronic sleep stage-dependent linear and nonlinear cardiac autonomic impairment in OSA. The aim of this study was to perform HRV analysis in apnea-free samples as well as during stage 2 and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep in mild and moderate OSA (MiOSA and MOSA, respectively) subjects as well as health controls (NonOSA).

Introduction: Clinical simulation is currently an integral part of the curriculum of the Anesthesiology residency programs in other countries. We aimed to describe and evaluate the insertion of simulation in an anesthesia residency training program.

Methods: Activities feasible to be used for training in a simulated environment were classified into 2 modules: workshops for technical skills conducted with first year residents, and high fidelity simulation scenarios performed with second and third year residents.
