Relatively greater progress has been made in stomatology over the last 50 years than in general medicine. The aetiology of stomatitis has been clarified, treatment of maxillofacial malformations and facial injuries has been improved, and better understanding exists of the pathological disorders of the temperomandibular joint and the salivary glands. In odontology: the aetiology and pathogenicity of caries and paradontopathies are still under discussion, and a medically orientated approach to these problems is necessary.
