Analysis and design of second-order sliding-mode algorithms for quadrotor roll and pitch estimation.

The problem addressed in this paper is that of quadrotor roll and pitch estimation without any assumption about the knowledge of perturbation bounds when Inertial Measurement Units (IMU) data or position measurements are available. A Smooth Sliding Mode (SSM) algorithm is first designed to provide reliable estimation under a smooth disturbance assumption. This assumption is next relaxed with the second proposed Adaptive Sliding Mode (ASM) algorithm that deals with disturbances of unknown bounds.

Association of silent infarcts in sickle cell anemia with decreased annexin A5 resistance.

Background: Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is characterized by abnormally shaped, adhesive RBCs that interact with white blood cells and the endothelium, leading to chronic hemolysis, vasculopathy and a prothrombotic state. About 10% of subjects with a thrombotic event in the general population will have an associated antiphospholipid (aPL) antibody. One proposed mechanism for the thrombophilic nature of aPL antibodies is the disruption of the potent anticoagulant annexin A5 or Annexin A5 resistance (A5R).

Spectral-Domain Optical Coherence Tomographic Angiography in Children With Amblyopia.

Importance: Amblyopia is the most common cause of visual impairment in childhood, with a prevalence of 1% to 4% in children in the United States. To date, no studies using noninvasive optical coherence tomographic angiography (OCTA) have measured blood flow in the retinal capillary layers in children with amblyopia.

Objective: To evaluate the retinal and microvascular features using OCTA in children (<18 years) with amblyopia.

Dual roles of Aβ in proliferative processes in an amyloidogenic model of Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease is a major neurodegenerative disorder that leads to severe cognitive deficits in the elderly population. Over the past two decades, multiple studies have focused on elucidating the causative factors underlying memory defects in Alzheimer's patients. In this regard, new evidence linking Alzheimer's disease-related pathology and neuronal stem cells suggests that hippocampal neurogenesis impairment is an important factor underlying these cognitive deficits.

Composite hemangioendothelioma with neuroendocrine marker expression: an aggressive variant.

Aberrant expression of neuroendocrine markers is extremely rare in endothelial neoplasms, with only a single report describing three cases. Although originally classified as conventional angiosarcoma, further assessment of these tumors revealed a strikingly composite morphology composed of retiform and epithelioid elements reminiscent of composite hemangioendothelioma, a rare subtype of hemangioendothelioma. To further investigate these findings, available materials from 11 morphologically distinctive endothelial tumors showing neuroendocrine marker expression were retrieved from our archives.

Gastroblastoma is a rare distinctive biphasic tumor of the stomach. The molecular biology of gastroblastoma has not been studied, and no affirmative diagnostic markers have been developed. We retrieved two gastroblastomas from the consultation practices of the authors and performed transcriptome sequencing on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue.

Predictors of Photographic Quality with a Handheld Nonmydriatic Fundus Camera Used for Screening of Vision-Threatening Diabetic Retinopathy.

Purpose: To analyze predictors of image quality for a handheld nonmydriatic fundus camera used for screening of vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy.

Methods: An ophthalmic photographer at an Aravind Eye Hospital obtained nonmydriatic and mydriatic fundus images from 3 fields in 275 eyes of 155 participants over 13 months using a Smartscope camera (Optomed, Oulu, Finland) and a Topcon tabletop fundus camera (Topcon, Tokyo, Japan). Two fellowship-trained retina specialists graded the images.

A model biorefinery for avocado (Persea americana mill.) processing.

This research investigated and evaluated a biorefinery for processing avocado Hass variety into microencapsulated phenolic compounds extract, ethanol, oil and xylitol. Avocado was first characterized for its potential valuable compounds; then, the techno-economic and environmental aspects of the biorefinery were developed and finally the total production costs and potential environmental impact of the proposed biorefinery were investigated. Four scenarios of the biorefinery were evaluated with different extent of mass and energy integration as well as the incorporation of a cogeneration system.

Wearable Sensor Data Classification for Human Activity Recognition Based on an Iterative Learning Framework.

The design of multiple human activity recognition applications in areas such as healthcare, sports and safety relies on wearable sensor technologies. However, when making decisions based on the data acquired by such sensors in practical situations, several factors related to sensor data alignment, data losses, and noise, among other experimental constraints, deteriorate data quality and model accuracy. To tackle these issues, this paper presents a data-driven iterative learning framework to classify human locomotion activities such as walk, stand, lie, and sit, extracted from the Opportunity dataset.

Rickets: Historical, Epidemiological, Pathophysiological, and Pathological Perspectives.

Rickets was a common metabolic disease of bone a century ago in Europe, North America, and East Asia (mainly due to vitamin D deficiency) but was largely eradicated in growing children by use of cod liver oil and the introduction of vitamin D fortification of milk in the 1930s in the United States. Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) remains the most common form of metabolic bone disease that is entirely preventable and treatable. Historically, rickets has appeared in sporadic epidemics and, despite the introduction of numerous preventive strategies, VDD has remained a global health problem amongst children.

Prevalence and risk factors for non-alcoholic fatty liver in children and youth with obesity.

Background: Non- Alcoholic Fatty Liver (NAFL) is a spectrum of liver diseases (LD) that ranges from benign fatty infiltration of the liver to cirrhosis and hepatic failure. Hepatic ultrasound (US) and serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) are often used as markers of NAFL. Our aim is to describe prevalence of NAFL and associated findings on ultrasound (US) and biochemical parameters in a population of children and adolescents with obesity at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario.

IgM myeloma: A multicenter retrospective study of 134 patients.

IgM myeloma is a rare hematologic malignancy for which the clinicopathological features and patient outcomes have not been extensively studied. We carried out a multicenter retrospective study in patients with diagnosis of IgM myeloma defined by >10% marrow involvement by monoclonal plasma cells, presence of an IgM monoclonal paraproteinemia of any size, and anemia, renal dysfunction, hypercalcemia, lytic lesions and/or t(11;14) identified by FISH. A total of 134 patients from 20 centers were included in this analysis.

Urogynecological conditions associated with overactive bladder symptoms in women.

Introduction: Overactive bladder symptoms (OAB) affect 9-43% of women and are associated with underlying disorders, including pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI). The aim of this study is to identify urogynecological conditions associated with OAB symptoms.

Methods: This prospective, institutional review board-approved study included women referred to a tertiary centre with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS).

Surgical treatment of detrusor underactivity: a short term proof of concept study.

Objectives: To compare the surgical outcomes of men with bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) due to benign prostatic obstruction (BPO) to those with detrusor underactivity (DU) or acontractile detrusor (DA).

Materials And Methods: This retrospective, IRB approved study included men who underwent BPO surgery for refractory LUTS or urinary retention. Patients were grouped based on videourodynamic (VUDS) findings: 1) men with BOO, 2) men with DU and 3) men with DA.

Environmental and occupational exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) is a major threat to female reproductive health. Bisphenol A (BPA), an environmental toxicant that is commonly found in polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins, has received much attention due to its estrogenic activity and high risk of chronic exposure in human. Whereas BPA has been linked to infertility and recurrent miscarriage in women, the impact of its exposure on uterine function during early pregnancy remains unclear.

Extreme genetic structure in a social bird species despite high dispersal capacity.

Social barriers have been shown to reduce gene flow and contribute to genetic structure among populations in species with high cognitive capacity and complex societies, such as cetaceans, apes and humans. In birds, high dispersal capacity is thought to prevent population divergence unless major geographical or habitat barriers induce isolation patterns by dispersal, colonization or adaptation limitation. We report that Iberian populations of the red-billed chough, a social, gregarious corvid with high dispersal capacity, show a striking degree of genetic structure composed of at least 15 distinct genetic units.

Feasibility of identifying out of care HIV-positive patients in a hospital setting and enrolling them in a retention intervention.

Background: The hospital setting provides an opportunity to re-engage people living with HIV (PLWH) in HIV care. We developed and implemented a protocol to identify PLWH in a hospital setting. The aim of the current study was to report on our strategy to recruit hospitalized HIV patients into an intervention study, and to report on lessons learned for future studies.

[Eugenics and education in twentieth-century Brazil: an interview with Jerry Dávila].

A Brazilianist, historian, and specialist in the relationships between eugenics, race, and education, the director of the Lemann Institute, Jerry Dávila, shares in this interview some of his experiences as a scholar of these subjects. In Diploma of whiteness, a book that had major repercussions and circulated widely amongst Brazilian researchers, he examined how race and eugenics influenced Brazilian education between 1917 and 1945. Dávila highlights the challenges facing eugenics research at the present time, his impressions of the seminar "History of eugenics: broadening perspectives" held by Casa de Oswaldo Cruz/Fiocruz in 2015, in which he took part, and his latest research interests.

Laponite as a rheology modifier of alginate solutions: Physical gelation and aging evolution.

The rheological behavior of alginate and Laponite/alginate solutions was studied. It was observed that the Cross viscosity model successfully describes the steady-state shear behavior of this polysaccharide. The scaling behavior analyzed for the entangled regime is in good agreement with polyelectrolyte solutions (G∼c), with interactions generated between the alginate and the charged surfaces of the Laponite platelets.

Incidence of Hepatocellular Carcinoma in All 50 United States, From 2000 Through 2012.

Background & Aims: The incidence and mortality of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) have been reported to be plateauing in the United States. The United States has large racial, ethnic, and regional variation; we collected data from all 50 states to better analyze changes in HCC incidence in the entire United States.

Methods: We collected data from the US Cancer Statistics registry, which covers 97% of the population, and calculated adjusted incidence rates.

Absence of spontaneous response improvement beyond day +100 after autologous stem cell transplantation in multiple myeloma.

The response evaluation after autologous stem-cell transplantation (ASCT) is usually performed at day +100 in patients with multiple myeloma (MM). A recent report suggests that improvement in the response can be observed beyond day +100. The aim of the present study has been to evaluate the rate of improved response and outcome beyond day +100 after ASCT, with and without maintenance therapy.
