This evaluation was based on replies from a random sample of general dental practitioners who were asked to complete questionnaires before and after being sent a video and accompanying booklet on partial denture design. Forty per cent (257) of the original sample (636) completed and returned both questionnaires. A total of 212 respondents (82%) felt the video had been of value and 175 (68%) said they would be more likely to provide metal partial dentures after having watched it.

This paper describes the ongoing development of a design assistant, RaPiD, for use in prosthetic dentistry. RaPiD integrates computed-aided design, knowledge-based systems and databases, employing a logic-based representation as the unifying medium. The user's manipulation of icons representing the developing design is interpreted as a set of transactions on a logic database of design components.

10-12 year survivorship analysis of 811 primary or conversion Charnley arthroplasties showed 89 percent probability of mechanical survival (revision excluding sepsis). The mechanical failure rate was 7 percent, and more stems required revision than sockets. The anterio-posterior radiographs of 630 unrevised hips, with a minimum 3-year follow-up, were evaluated using the CART system of terminology.

Dentists frequently fail to provide dental technicians with the design information necessary for the construction of removable partial dentures. The computerization of dental practices and the development of appropriate knowledge-based systems could provide a powerful tool for improving this aspect of dental care. This article describes one such system currently under development which is an example of the kind of additional facility that will become available for those practices with the necessary hardware.

A knowledge-based system for designing removable partial dentures is described in which graphical representations of denture components are manipulated directly by the user to build the required denture design. The arch form of individual patients may be depicted by linear movement and rotation of the icons representing teeth. The size, shape and position of many denture components are determined dynamically to conform to the shape of abutment teeth and to the juxtaposition of other elements.

We report the results of a 4- to 17-year clinical and radiological follow-up of 264 Charnley first-generation stems in comparison with those of 402 second- and subsequent-generation stems. The incidence of fracture was 4.1% in first-generation stems and 0.

Clinical methods for heat treating composite resin restorations have been developed. In this investigation, the effect of heat treatments on the diametral tensile strength of composite resin was determined. The composite resin restorative materials were selected according to the manufacturers' suggested use for anterior or posterior teeth, filler particle composition, and light-cured or chemical polymerization.

An account is given of Sigmund Freud's illness and care following the diagnosis of oral cancer in 1923. The key figure in the clinical management was Professor Hans Pichler of Vienna, who undertook the maxillectomy and most of the subsequent prosthetic care. Other contributors included Doctors Schroeder and Weinmann and Professor Kazanjian.

One hundred fifty-six Charnley low-friction arthroplasties performed in patients 50 years of age or younger are reviewed. Excluding sepsis, survivorship analysis showed a 12% probability of mechanical failure at 10 years. The detailed clinical and radiological results of 130 hips with a 3-16-year follow-up period are presented.

The anthraquinone dye reactive blue 2 was found to be a potent inhibitor of a protein kinase isolated and purified from thylakoids. This enzyme was also inhibited in situ, with corresponding inhibition of ATP-dependent quenching of the chlorophyll fluorescence. The mode of inhibition was noncompetitive, with a Ki of 8 microM for the membrane-bound kinase, and 6 microM for the purified kinase.

Addison's disease is an uncommon endocrine condition manifested by a variety of nonspecific symptoms, such as malaise, anorexia and nausea. Symptoms usually do not occur until most of the adrenal gland has been destroyed. Autoimmune disease has surpassed tuberculosis as the primary cause of Addison's disease.

Intrastromal corneal rings can flatten the human cornea, providing a potential new method of keratorefractive surgery. We investigated the effect of implanting various ring sizes of a given thickness in 8.50-mm intrastromal channels dissected in human eye bank corneas.

An in vitro test for screening the abrasion resistance and abrasivity of composite resins when used to provide tooth undercuts for removable partial denture clasps is described. In the present study nine composite resins were tested against wrought stainless steel round clasps. The results indicated that the abrasion of any of the composites tested was unlikely to cause a noticeable loss of retention in the clinical situation.
