Background: In humans, kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1) is a biomarker of acute kidney injury that can be quantified in urine. Preliminary investigation in cats with experimentally induced acute kidney injury showed that KIM-1 urine concentration correlated with kidney injury histopathology scores. A lateral flow assay (LFA) has recently become available for patient-side feline KIM-1 measurement.

From the time of adoption, the puppy suffered episodes of illness affecting various organ systems, which resolved with supportive therapy but relapsed once medical therapy was discontinued. Review of the hematologic data revealed cyclic fluctuations in circulating blood cells.

We tested serum samples for spike protein IgG and IgM in household pets and also in animals from shelters and low-cost neuter clinics. Among household pets, 2% (1/49) of swab specimens from dogs and 7.

The objective of this randomized controlled study was to determine whether providing noncompetitive feeding and lying access in the close-up dry period improves health and immune function. Forty-eight Holstein cows of all parities were randomly assigned to a treatment group of 6 to 10 cows in 1 pen with either 80% cows to stalls and 90 cm of feeding space per cow (understocked) or 120% stocking density and 45 cm of feeding space per cow (overstocked) for 3 wk before expected calving.

We previously developed a heterologous cancer immunization strategy that utilized a replication-defective adenovirus-vectored primary vaccine encoding a tumour antigen followed by boosting with a replication-competent Maraba virus expressing the same antigen. To assess the safety of oncolytic Maraba virus-based booster vaccines and inform the design of clinical trials, we conducted translational studies in cats, which have immune systems that are similar to people and spontaneously develop cancers of comparable types and etiologies.

The aim of this study was to test the robustness of our equine cord blood (CB) MSC isolation protocol, to characterize the CB-MSC before and after cryopreservation, and to evaluate their immunosuppressive phenotype. We hypothesized that MSC can be consistently isolated from equine CB, have unique and reproducible marker expression and in vitro suppress lymphoproliferation.

The goals of this study were (1) to purify protein C from fresh frozen canine plasma by barium chloride and ammonium sulphate precipitation, followed by immunoaffinity chromatography using a monoclonal mouse antibody against human protein C (HPC4) and (2) to characterize this protein's structure.
Results: The purified protein contained three glycosylated forms of a heavy chain (~49 kDa) and a glycosylated light chain (~ 25 kDa).
Viral gastrointestinal infections are among the most important causes of childhood morbidity and mortality, especially in non-industrialized countries. The objective of this study was the molecular characterization of rotaviruses, noroviruses, adenoviruses, astroviruses, and enteroviruses obtained from 367 children in the Northern Region of Ghana. One hundred and forty-two rotavirus-positive stool samples were examined.

Compared to PCR results, sensitivities and specificities were 75% and 95% for rotavirus and 22% and 84% for adenovirus. In resource-poor settings, ICTs may help to overcome difficulties in the diagnosis of rotavirus infection.

Chalcones are one of the classes of natural products that are known to possess antiplasmodial properties. Therefore, the in vitro antiplasmodial activity of the main hop chalcone xanthohumol and seven derivatives was evaluated.

The compounds have been evaluated for their in vitro antiplasmodial activity against the chloroquine-sensitive strain poW and the chloroquine-resistant clone Dd2 of Plasmodium falciparum. Additionally, the cytotoxic effects against mouse fibroblasts (NIH 3T3) in vitro, and human hepatocytes were evaluated.

In addition, four known aporphine alkaloids-nor-boldine, boldine, laurotetanine, and N-methyl-laurotetanine-were obtained. The evaluation of the antiplasmodial activity of the isolated compounds against two strains of Plasmodium falciparum (PoW, Dd2) showed a moderate activity of nor-boldine.

Among the isolated phenolic compounds three novel 2-arylbenzofuran-3-carbaldehydes, andinermal A-C, were obtained together with a new flavanonol glycoside, taxifolin-3-O-(3"-O-trans-cinnamoyl)-alpha-L-rhamnopyranoside.
