Background Context: Low back pain (LBP) is a pervasive issue, causing substantial economic burden and physical distress worldwide. Facet joint osteoarthritis (FJ OA) is believed to be a significant contributor to this problem. However, the precise role of chondrocyte senescence in FJ OA remains unclear, as does whether the clearance of chondrocyte senescence can alleviate the progression of FJ OA.

Background: Treatment of acute stroke, before a distinction can be made between ischemic and hemorrhagic types, is challenging. Whether very early blood-pressure control in the ambulance improves outcomes among patients with undifferentiated acute stroke is uncertain.

Methods: We randomly assigned patients with suspected acute stroke that caused a motor deficit and with elevated systolic blood pressure (≥150 mm Hg), who were assessed in the ambulance within 2 hours after the onset of symptoms, to receive immediate treatment to lower the systolic blood pressure (target range, 130 to 140 mm Hg) (intervention group) or usual blood-pressure management (usual-care group).

This study explores the potential of regioisomeric quinoidal-resonance π-spacers in designing near-infrared (NIR) non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) for high-performance organic solar cell devices. Adopting thienothiazole as the π-spacer, two new isomeric A-Q-D-Q-A NFAs, TzN-S and TzS-S, are designed and synthesized. Both NFAs demonstrate a broad spectral response extended to the NIR region.

Cardiac fibrosis is a significant contributor to heart failure and is characterized by abnormal ECM deposition and impaired contractile function. We have previously developed a model of cardiac fibrosis via TGF-β treatment of engineered microtissues using heart-on-a-chip technology which incorporates human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes and cardiac fibroblasts. Here, we describe that these cardiac fibrotic tissues expressed markers associated with cellular senescence via transcriptomic analysis.

Soil-bentonite (S-B) materials are promising backfill materials for use as engineered barriers in heavy metal-contaminated sites. The effects of contaminant exposure on the retention performance of the S-B barrier remain unrevealed. In this study, based on the pollution status of an abandoned ferroalloy factory located in southern China, the retention performance of the S-B mixture toward Cr(VI) and Zn(II) was studied through adsorption and diffusion experiments sequentially; the separate effect of ionic strength (binary solution) and the combined effect of ionic strength and associated heavy metal ion (ternary solution) were discussed.

The progressive decline of physiological function and the increased risk of age-related diseases challenge healthy aging. Multiple anti-aging manipulations, such as senolytics, have proven beneficial for health; however, the biomarkers that label in vivo senescence at systemic levels are lacking, thus hindering anti-aging applications. In this study, we generate a Glb1‒Glb1-2A-mCherry (GAC) reporter allele at the Glb1 gene locus, which encodes lysosomal β-galactosidase-an enzyme elevated in tissues of old mice.

The conventional direct torque control (DTC) has high torque and stator flux fluctuation that causes the stator current distortion. This paper presents an efficient control method based on the feedback-linearization direct torque control (FL-DTC) method for an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) drive by using an improved firefly algorithm. The proposed approach can greatly restrain the poor performance of torque and stator flux.

Cr in the CaScSiO garnet (CSSG) has the ability to convert blue light to broadband near-infrared (NIR) emissions, which is a promising strategy for next-generation smart NIR light sources based on blue LEDs. The Cr luminescence strongly depends on temperature due to electron-phonon coupling (EPC). We reveal the EPC mechanism of Cr in CSSG for the first time by temperature-dependent photoluminescence measurement from 77 to 573 K and cathodoluminescence using a scanning electron microscope.

To determine the radiosensitizing effect of apatinib on esophageal cancer cells, and to preliminarily investigate the underlying mechanism, KYSE-150 cells were treated with apatinib, x-ray or apatinib combined with x-ray, and compared with a blank control. It was observed that apatinib significantly inhibited vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) secretion and the proliferation of KYSE-150 cells in a dose-dependent manner. As the concentration of apatinib increased, the radiobiological parameters inactivation dose (D), quasi domain does (D) and survival fraction (SF) of KYSE-150 cells decreased, while the sensitization enhancement ratio SER increased.

So far, a large number of rare earth (RE) and non-RE-doped emission-tunable crystals based on controllable energy transfer have become available, but numerous mechanistic issues, particularly for those that involve temperature-dependent energy transfer between the well-shielded 4f RE ions, lack comprehensive theoretical and experimental investigation, limiting greatly their development and applications in the future. Here, we design and report a type of Tb,Eu-doped SrAlOCl phosphors capable of multiemissions upon excitation at 376 nm, through using the orthorhombic SrAlOCl as the host lattice while the well-shielded 4f Tb and Eu ions as dual luminescent centers. Our results reveal that the energy transfer from Tb to Eu ions, happening via an electric dipole-quadrupole (d-q) interaction, can be controlled by the doping ratio of Tb and Eu, leading to the tunable emissions from green (0.

Chronic pain, often defined as any pain lasting more than 3 months, is poorly managed because of its multifaceted and complex mechanisms. Calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) is a multifunctional serine/threonine kinase that plays a fundamental role in synaptic plasticity, learning, and memory. Recent emerging evidence demonstrates increased expression and activity of CaMKII in the spinal cord and dorsal root ganglia of various chronic pain models.

Examining the proteins that plants secrete into the apoplast in response to pathogen attack provides crucial information for understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying plant innate immunity. In this study, we analyzed the changes in the root apoplast secretome of the Verticillium wilt-resistant island cotton cv Hai 7124 (Gossypium barbadense) upon infection with Verticillium dahliae Two-dimensional differential gel electrophoresis and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization tandem time-of-flight mass spectrometry analysis identified 68 significantly altered spots, corresponding to 49 different proteins. Gene ontology annotation indicated that most of these proteins function in reactive oxygen species (ROS) metabolism and defense response.

In the first part of this paper, we derive a source model describing the relationship between the rate, distortion, and quantization steps of the dead-zone plus uniform threshold scalar quantizers with nearly uniform reconstruction quantizers for generalized Gaussian distribution. This source model consists of rate-quantization, distortion-quantization (D-Q), and distortion-rate (D-R) models. In this part, we first rigorously confirm the accuracy of the proposed source model by comparing the calculated results with the coding data of JM 16.

This paper provides a systematic rate-distortion (R-D) analysis of the dead-zone plus uniform threshold scalar quantization (DZ+UTSQ) with nearly uniform reconstruction quantization (NURQ) for generalized Gaussian distribution (GGD), which consists of two aspects: R-D performance analysis and R-D modeling. In R-D performance analysis, we first derive the preliminary constraint of optimum entropy-constrained DZ+UTSQ/NURQ for GGD, under which the property of the GGD distortion-rate (D-R) function is elucidated. Then for the GGD source of actual transform coefficients, the refined constraint and precise conditions of optimum DZ+UTSQ/NURQ are rigorously deduced in the real coding bit rate range, and efficient DZ+UTSQ/NURQ design criteria are proposed to reasonably simplify the utilization of effective quantizers in practice.

Fat-connective tissue size distribution (FSD) in hams is a fundamental physical property for its quality assessment. FSD is related to the sensory properties such as texture, taste, quality of raw meat and visual appearance. In this paper we present a tool to carry out the multifractal analysis (MFA) of two-dimensional binary images of pre-sliced pork hams through the calculation of the f(α)-spectra, Rényi (D(q)) dimensions, and associated statistical regressions and parameters.
