Aims: We have characterized the microbiome of infected chronic diabetic wounds (CDWs), exploring associations with antibiotic use and wound severity in a Sri Lankan cohort.

Methods And Results: Fifty CDW patients were enrolled, 38 of whom received antibiotics. Tissue biopsies were analysed by microbiome profiling, and wounds were graded using the University of Texas Wound Grading System.

A method for the determination of selected aromatic amino acid biomarkers of oxidative stress using microchip electrophoresis with electrochemical detection is described. The separation of the major reaction products of phenylalanine and tyrosine with reactive nitrogen and oxygen species was accomplished using ligand exchange micellar electrokinetic chromatography with a PDMS/glass hybrid chip. Electrochemical detection was achieved using a pyrolyzed photoresist film working electrode.

Introduction And Importance: Although short acting acetyl cholinesterase inhibitors are used in colonic or small bowel pseudo-obstruction, their use in post-surgical gastroparesis is not clear. We demonstrate the successful use of neostigmine in a patient with resistant gastroparesis following distal gastrectomy.

Case Presentation: A 73-year-old male presented with features of gastric outflow obstruction 3 weeks following a distal gastrectomy.

Carnosine (β-alanyl-L-histidine) is a naturally occurring endogenous peptide widely distributed in excitable tissues such as the brain. This dipeptide possesses well-demonstrated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aggregation properties, and it may be useful for treatment of pathologies characterized by oxidative stress and energy unbalance such as depression and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Microglia, the brain-resident macrophages, are involved in different physiological brain activities such synaptic plasticity and neurogenesis, but their dysregulation has been linked to the pathogenesis of numerous diseases.

Biofilms have been associated with chronic wound infections in diabetic patients. The study assessed the occurrence of biofilms in chronic diabetic wounds (CDWs) in a Sri Lankan cohort. Tissue specimens collected during surgical debridement were analysed by quantitative differential viable counting, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fluorescence insitu hybridization (FISH) and light microscopy with Gram and Haematoxylin-Eosin staining.
