Hurricanes, industrial animal operations, and acute gastrointestinal illness in North Carolina, USA.

North Carolina (NC) ranks third among US states in both hog production and hurricanes. NC's hogs are housed in concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) in the eastern, hurricane-prone part of the state. Hurricanes can inundate hog waste lagoons, transporting fecal bacteria that may cause acute gastrointestinal illness (AGI).

A trial of radiolabeled antibody yttrium-90-FF-21101 for the treatment of advanced ovarian and other cancers.

Background: Yttrium-90 FF-21101 (Y-FF-21101) is a radiopharmaceutical that targets P-cadherin as a therapy against solid tumors. A previously reported, first-in-human study determined that a dose of 25 mCi/m was safe, and a patient with clear cell carcinoma of the ovary achieved a complete response. In this article, the authors report the results of Y-FF-21101 treatment in an ovarian carcinoma expansion cohort and in patients with selected solid tumors who had known high P-cadherin expression.

Causes and consequences of divorce in a long-lived socially monogamous bird.

In socially monogamous species, sexual selection not only depends on initial mate choice but also mate switching. To date, studies lack assessment of (1) differences between passive (widowhood) and active (divorce) mate switching, (2) longer term fitness consequences (beyond the season post-divorce) and (3) how age masks reproductive costs and benefits of divorce. We investigated causes and short- and long-term consequences of mate switching and their age dependence using longitudinal data on Seychelles warblers (Acrocephalus sechellensis).

Posterior Vault Distraction Osteogenesis for Craniosynostosis-Surgical Outcomes Over 12 Years.

Introduction: Posterior vault distraction osteogenesis (PVDO) allows significant increase in intracranial volume but is associated with complications including cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks, infection and device failure. The authors outline their outcomes over 12 years and the impact of PVDO on pre-existing Chiari malformation type 1 (CM).

Method: Retrospective review of all PVDOs in our unit over a period of 12 years from 2011 to 2023.

Dose finding, bioavailability, and PK-PD of oral triapine with concurrent chemoradiation for locally advanced cervical cancer and vaginal cancer (ETCTN 9892).

Background: The addition of IV triapine to chemoradiation appeared active in phase I and II studies but drug delivery is cumbersome. We examined PO triapine with cisplatin chemoradiation.

Methods: We implemented a 3 + 3 design for PO triapine dose escalation with expansion, starting at 100 mg, five days a week for five weeks while receiving radiation with weekly IV cisplatin for locally advanced cervical or vaginal cancer.
