In this work we review research activities on a few of the most relevant structural aspects of bilirubin (BR) and biliverdin (BV). Special attention is paid to the exocyclic C=C bonds being in mostly rather than configurations, and to the overall conformation being essentially different for BR and BV due to the presence or absence of the double C=C bond at C-10. In both cases, racemic mixtures of each compound of either or configuration are present in achiral solutions; however, imbalance between the two configurations may be easily achieved.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground And Objectives: To determine whether primitive reflexes serve as an indicator of dementia in adults with Down syndrome (DS), we collected neurologic examination data, cognitive and behavioral assessments, and clinical consensus diagnoses of dementia from 92 adults with DS.
Methods: In a cross-sectional, observational study of a regional cohort, χ and Fisher exact tests examined individual reflexes across the diagnostic group (no, possible, or probable dementia). In 64 participants with all 8 reflexes assessed, the number of primitive reflexes was assessed as a predictor of diagnosis using age-controlled multinomial logistic regression and of performance on clinical assessments (Brief Praxis Test [BPT], Severe Impairment Battery [SIB], and the Dementia Questionnaire for People with Learning Disabilities [DLD]) using age-adjusted linear regression.
Background: Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) are at high risk for dementia, specifically Alzheimer's disease. However, many measures regularly used for the detection of dementia in the general population are not suitable for individuals with DS due in part to floor effects. View Article and Find Full Text PDFA series of six optically active derivatives of the bile pigment biliverdin, namely (β,β')-dimethylmesobiliverdin-XIIIα, cyclic esters of linear diols [HO(CH)OH] where = 1-6, have been investigated by vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results were correlated with the length () of the diester belt, the verdin helicity and an ⇄ conformational equilibrium - as previously shown by electronic circular dichroism (ECD). Furthermore, ECD spectra have been found to be quite sensitive to solvent nature and pH.

We aimed to validate the clinical utility of plasma neurofilament light chain (NfL) for the diagnosis of symptomatic Alzheimer's disease in Down syndrome, assess its prognostic value, and establish longitudinal changes in adults with Down syndrome.
Methods: We did a multicentre cohort study, including adults with Down syndrome (≥18 years), recruited from six hospitals and university medical centres in France, Germany, Spain, the UK, and the USA, who had been assessed, followed up, and provided at least two plasma samples.
