Aortoesophageal fistula is a rare emergency that presents a real challenge for cardiothoracic surgeons. There have been few reports of survivors. Pergolide can produce a fibrotic process in heart valves, resulting in valve insufficiency in up to 25% of cases. Herein we describe the case of a 68-year-old man who received pergolide for 2 years for Parkinson's disease.

Single doses of 1 g of fusidic acid and 2 g of cefepime were administered intravenously to two groups of 15 and 15 patients respectively upon initiation of anesthesia. Samples of serum, heart valves, myocardium, pericardium, mediastinal fat and sternum were collected within <1 hour, 1-2 h and 2-4 h after the end of drug infusion.

Cysts were located in the left ventricular wall (four patients), right ventricular wall (one patient), interventricular septum (one patient), interatrial septum (one patient), right atrium (one patient), pericardial cavity (one patient) and in multiple loci (one patient). Apart from two asymptomatic cases, clinical manifestations included chest pain (four patients), anaphylactic shock (one patient), constrictive pericarditis (one patient), congestive heart failure (one patient) and arterial embolism (one patient).
