Denitrification, the dissimilatory reduction of NO3- to N2O and N2, is found in a wide variety of organisms. In closed artificial systems, especially closed plant growth chambers, a significant loss of fixed-N occurs through denitrification, thereby decreasing the efficiency of the system and fouling the atmosphere with N2O. Denitrification is a form of anaerobic respiration.

A simplified closed system consisting of a plant growth chamber coupled to a decomposition chamber was used to study carbon exchange dynamics. The CO2 produced via the decomposition of wheat straw was used for photosynthetic carbon uptake by wheat plants. The atmosphere of the two chambers was connected through a circuit of known flow rate.

This article summarizes the findings of a meeting held during September 1995, in Berkeley, CA. The purpose of the meeting was to provide NASA with a summary of the current data, theories, and hypotheses concerning the energetics, dynamics, and stability of nitrogen cycling in controlled systems. NASA's interest stems from the development of advanced life support systems that must recycle and/or regenerate all life support materials.
