Information on species biology and genetics can influence the development of fisheries and assist in their management, but the genetic structuring and diversity of B. splendens populations remain largely unknown.

Deep-sea Lantern Sharks (Etmopteridae) represent the most speciose family within Dogfish Sharks (Squaliformes). We compiled an extensive DNA dataset to estimate the first molecular phylogeny of the family and to provide node age estimates for the origin and diversification for this enigmatic group. Phylogenetic inferences yielded consistent and well supported hypotheses based on 4685bp of both nuclear (RAG1) and mitochondrial genes (COI, 12S-partial 16S, tRNAVal and tRNAPhe).

Nacre or mother-of-pearl in the shell of Pinctada margaritifera is composed of 95-99% calcium carbonate and 1-5% organic matrix. In this study, we developed an original technique to characterize the genes differentially expressed in nacre-forming cells (NFC) by combining suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH), to establish a cDNA subtractive library, with rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE)-PCR. Seventy-two specific cDNA sequences have been obtained so far.

We have analyzed the phylogenetic relationships of 160 specimens from 88 samples representing all defined species of the African Aplocheiloid subgenus Chromaphyosemion in order to examine the monophyly of this group, the species interrelationships, and to reveal trends in chromosomal evolution and formulate hypotheses about their evolutionary history. The data set comprised 1153 total nucleotides from the mitochondrial 12S rRNA, cytochrome oxidase I, and D-loop. The molecular-based topologies were analyzed by maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, distance method and Bayesian inference support the monophyly of the subgenus Chromaphyosemion.
