Hepcidin was originally detected as a liver peptide with antimicrobial activity and it functions as a central regulator in the systemic iron metabolism. Consequently suppression of hepcidin leads to iron accumulation in the liver. AbbVie developed a monoclonal antibody ([mAb]; repulsive guidance molecule [RGMa/c] mAb) that downregulates hepcidin expression by influencing the RGMc/bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)/neogenin receptor complex and causes iron deposition in the liver.

High levels of hepcidin, the main regulator of systemic iron metabolism, lead to various diseases. Targeting hepcidin and lowering its concentration is a possible form of intervention in order to treat these diseases. High turnover rate of hepcidin is a major drawback of therapies directly targeting this peptide.

The need for accurate carbon budgeting, climate change modelling, and sustainable resource management has lead to an increase in the number of large area forest monitoring programs. Large area forest monitoring programs often utilize field and remotely sensed data sources. Sampling, via field or photo plots, enables the collection of data with the desired level of categorical detail in a timely and efficient manner.

Objectives: Our objectives were to evaluate the effect of single and repeated grapefruit juice ingestion relative to water on the oral pharmacokinetics of the nonmetabolized and P-glycoprotein-transported drug talinolol in humans and to assess the potential impact of grapefruit juice ingestion on P-glycoprotein and intestinal uptake transporters.

Methods: The oral pharmacokinetics of 50 mg talinolol was determined with water, with 1 glass of grapefruit juice (300 mL), and after 6 days of repeated grapefruit juice ingestion (900 mL/d) in 24 healthy white volunteers. MDR1 messenger ribonucleic acid and P-glycoprotein levels were measured in duodenal biopsy specimens obtained from 3 individuals before and after ingestion of grapefruit juice.
