Article Synopsis
  • Influenza A and B viruses lead to significant global health issues, causing millions of serious cases and hundreds of thousands of deaths annually, particularly from bacterial complications in seniors over 65.
  • A retrospective study analyzed clinical and lab data from 261 seniors treated for influenza at University Hospital Pilsen to understand disease progression and complications.
  • Results showed that many patients experienced severe symptoms, with 18% mortality linked to complications, highlighting the need for timely vaccination and preventive measures for at-risk populations.

Background: Although people with HIV might be at risk of severe outcomes from infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2; coronavirus 2019 [COVID-19]), regional and temporal differences in SARS-CoV-2 testing in people with HIV across Europe have not been previously described.

Methods: We described the proportions of testing, positive test results, and hospitalizations due to COVID-19 between 1 January 2020 and 31 December 2021 in the EuroSIDA cohort and the factors associated with being tested for SARS-CoV-2 and with ever testing positive.

Results: Of 9012 participants, 2270 (25.

Article Synopsis
  • There is ongoing uncertainty about the relationship between SARS-CoV-2 and HIV, specifically regarding the risks for individuals infected with both viruses.
  • A study involving 536 HIV-positive patients in central and eastern Europe revealed that low CD4 cell counts and detectable HIV viral loads are linked to increased severity of COVID-19 symptoms.
  • Findings suggest that a lower HIV viral load correlates with less severe COVID-19 outcomes, indicating its potential use as a prognostic tool for clinicians treating co-infected patients.

Background: For people with HIV and CD4 counts >500 cells/mm, early initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) reduces serious AIDS and serious non-AIDS (SNA) risk compared with deferral of treatment until CD4 counts are <350 cells/mm. Whether excess risk of AIDS and SNA persists once ART is initiated for those who defer treatment is uncertain.

Methods: The Strategic Timing of AntiRetroviral Treatment (START) trial, as previously reported, randomly assigned 4684 ART-naive HIV-positive adults with CD4 counts .
