The use of porous titanium-based implant materials for bone contact has been gaining ground in recent years. Selective laser melting (SLM) is a rapid prototyping method by which porous implants with highly defined external dimensions and internal architecture can be produced. The coating of porous implants produced by SLM with ceramic layers based on calcium phosphate (CaP) remains relatively unexplored, as does the doping of such coatings with magnesium (Mg) to promote bone formation.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFIn 1938, Dr Henry Milch described a maneuver for the reduction of acute anterior shoulder dislocations consisting of shoulder abduction and external rotation with "pulsion" of the humeral head. Although many methods may be used to reduce the dislocated glenohumeral joint, the Milch technique is unique because of its gentle, effective, and relatively painless nature. This article studied the effectiveness of this technique on 76 consecutive acute anterior shoulder dislocations in 75 patients seen in our institution's two campuses over an 18-month period.

Achieving bony union and early weight bearing in peritrochanteric femur fractures poses a continuous challenge for the orthopedic surgeon. Current standards of surgical fixation for the myriad possible fracture patterns include the compression hip screw (CHS), the 90 degrees/95 degrees blade plate, and locked intramedullary nails. The gamma nail (GN) was designed as a "hybrid" of these devices, combining theoretical biomechanical advantages that should allow earlier postoperative weight bearing with surgical technique advantages that should decrease operative morbidity.

The purpose of this study was to establish normal values for neonatal hip range of motion, knee range of motion, tibial torsion, and foot alignment. Normal values for examination of the lower extremity in the neonate are not well-documented in the orthopaedic literature. One-thousand healthy neonates were examined by the orthopaedic residency under the supervision of an attending doctor.
