Trees' functional strategies to cope with extreme drought are essential under climate change. In a mixed Mediterranean forest, we analyzed the functional strategy in response to drought of four co-occurring species (Pinus pinea, Pinus pinaster, Juniperus oxycedrus, and Quercus ilex) during two years. Specifically, we assessed functional traits related to tree water status, leaf water relations, and gas exchange.

Article Synopsis
  • Understanding how tree species adapt to drought and recover afterward is key to predicting forest vulnerability, especially at their range edges where conditions are harsher.
  • Research on European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) showed variations in leaf traits, growth patterns, and drought responses among different families, suggesting significant genetic diversity.
  • The study found that lower phenotypic plasticity was linked to greater drought resistance, and the independent variations in drought resistance and recovery can help inform future adaptations to climate change challenges.

Research on personal adornments depends on the reliable characterisation of materials to trace provenance and model complex social networks. However, many analytical techniques require the transfer of materials from the museum to the laboratory, involving high insurance costs and limiting the number of items that can be analysed, making the process of empirical data collection a complicated, expensive and time-consuming routine. In this study, we compiled the largest geochemical dataset of Iberian personal adornments (n = 1243 samples) by coupling X-ray fluorescence compositional data with their respective X-ray diffraction mineral labels.

Objectives: Patients speaking a primary language other than English face barriers to equitable care, particularly patient-provider communications. There is no gold standard for providing inpatient medical interpretation on family-centered rounds (FCR). We aimed to implement simultaneous, in-person interpretation of FCR for Spanish-speaking families and hypothesized improved satisfaction in care.

Twenty-seven months into the current pandemic and 18 months after vaccinations were made available, there are still relatively limited data on the incidence of recurrent Bell's Palsy after the administration of mRNA-based vaccines. The authors continue to believe that it is through rigorous reporting that the true incidence can be tabulated eventually.
