Salinity impacts important processes in plants, reducing their yield. The effect of salinity on the cytosolic pH (pHcyt) has been little studied. In this research, we employed transgenic tobacco plants expressing the pH sensor Pt-GFP to investigate the alterations in pHcyt in cells across various root zones.

Cytochrome c3 (uranyl reductase) from can reduce uranium in bacterial cells and in cell-free systems. This gene was introduced in tobacco under control of the RbcS promoter, and the resulting transgenic plants accumulated uranium when grown on a uranyl ion containing medium. The uptaken uranium was detected by EM in chloroplasts.

In the common chickweed , two antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), SmAMP1.1a and SmAMP1.2a, have been shown to be proteolytically released as products of the expression of a single gene, .

The SaCLCa1 gene, a putative orthologue of AtCLCa, the Arabidopsis thaliana gene encoding a NO-/H antiporter, was cloned from the halophyte Suaeda altissima. It belonged to the CLC family, comprising anionic channels and anion/H antiporters. SaCLCa1 ion specificity was studied by heterologous expression of this gene in Saccharomyces cerevisiae GEF1 disrupted strain, Δgef1, where GEF1 encoded the only CLC family protein, the Cl- transporter Gef1p, in undisrupted strains of this organism.

We study the volume distribution of nodal domains of families of naturally arising Gaussian random fields on generic manifolds, namely random band-limited functions. It is found that in the high energy limit a typical instance obeys a deterministic universal law, independent of the manifold. Some of the basic qualitative properties of this law, such as its support, monotonicity and continuity of the cumulative probability function, are established.
