HIV infection and illicit drugs are known to induce oxidative stress and linked with severity of viral replication, disease progression, impaired cell cycle regulation and neurodegeneration. Studies have shown that morphine accelerates HIV infection and disease progression mediated by Reactive oxygen species (ROS). Oxidative stress impact redox balance and ROS production affect cell cycle regulation.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between bilateral hypertrophic olivary degeneration seen on brain MRI and mitochondrial disorders in children, particularly focusing on Leigh and Leigh-like syndromes.
  • It involves a retrospective analysis of 125 children diagnosed with various metabolic and genetic disorders to determine the occurrence of inferior olivary nucleus hypertrophy.
  • The results show that this condition was identified in 10 patients, all from the Leigh and Leigh-like syndrome group, suggesting that radiologists should recognize this MRI finding for better early diagnosis and testing.
