Background: Children with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) are highly susceptible to malnutrition, which may restrict surgery eligibility and delay repair. Preoperative nutrition programs for children with unrepaired CL/P are an effective treatment to overcome malnutrition for safe surgical intervention in high-resource settings; however, the effectiveness of such programs has not been demonstrated in the setting of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We studied the impact of a preoperative nutrition program on improving nutritional status and achieving surgical eligibility for children with CL/P.

The well-being of people with anterior cruciate ligament rupture-related post-traumatic osteoarthritis in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Background: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures are a potent risk factor for post-traumatic knee osteoarthritis (PTOA). Annually, in Aotearoa New Zealand, approximately 2,500 people under the age of 30 undergo ACL reconstruction surgery. Due to the young age of injury and surgery, many develop osteoarthritis before age 50 and have a higher likelihood of requiring total knee replacement compared to the general population.

Mycobacterium ulcerans in Possum Feces before Emergence in Humans, Australia.

We describe emergence of Buruli ulcer in urban Geelong, Victoria, Australia, and examine timing and proximity of human cases to detection of Mycobacterium ulcerans DNA in possum feces. M. ulcerans-positive feces preceded human cases by up to 39 months, constituting an early warning of impending risk for Buruli ulcer.

Management of Mycobacterium ulcerans infection (Buruli ulcer) in Australia: consensus statement.

Buruli ulcer, caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans, is increasing in incidence and spreading to new areas in southeast Australia. With increasing experience and emerging evidence, this consensus statement considers contemporary data to provide up-to-date recommendations to clinicians who may encounter this disease. The emergence of Buruli ulcer in previously non-endemic areas highlights the importance of increasing clinician and community awareness of this disease.

Compilation of riverine water quality data from the Great Barrier Reef catchment area, northeastern Australia.

This manuscript describes the collation of available water quality data from the freshwater reaches of surface streams within the Great Barrier Reef catchment area, northeastern Australia. This compilation represents one of the most comprehensive online datasets for historical tropical and subtropical freshwater quality around the world. We document the criteria for selection of the data and associated publications as well as the processes of data cleaning used to produce a qualitative assessment of the datasets.
