Cost Comparison of Intramedullary Screw Fixation Versus Open Reduction and Internal Fixation With Plate and Screw Technique for Metacarpal Fractures.

Background: Intramedullary screw (IMS) fixation for metacarpal fractures is a relatively new fixation technique in comparison to plate and screw constructs. Our hypothesis evaluated whether IMS fixation for metacarpal fractures results in lower overall health care-associated costs in comparison to open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF).

Methods: A retrospective review of patients undergoing IMS fixation for metacarpal fractures at a single center during 2018 to 2022 was conducted.

Anomalies in Hadronic B Decays.

In this Letter, we perform fits to B→PP decays, where B={B^{0},B^{+},B_{s}^{0}} and the pseudoscalar P={π,K}, under the assumption of flavor SU(3) symmetry [SU(3)_{F}]. Although the fits to ΔS=0 or ΔS=1 decays individually are good, the combined fit is very poor: there is a 3.6σ disagreement with the SU(3)_{F} limit of the standard model (SM_{SU(3)_{F}}).

Adjunctive Dorsal Spanning Plate Fixation in the Stabilization of Perilunate Dislocations.

Purpose: To compare the biomechanical properties of adjunctive dorsal spanning plate (DSP) fixation with traditional K-wire fixation of perilunate dislocations in a cadaveric model.

Methods: Fourteen fresh-frozen cadaveric wrists underwent simulated perilunate injury. The specimens were randomly allocated to either K-wire fixation versus K-wire and DSP fixation.

Digital Preoperative Huddle Platform Use Leads to Decreased Surgical Cost.

Background And Objectives: Communication has a well-established effect on improving outcomes. The current study evaluated the effect of multidisciplinary preoperative team communication using a digital huddle software platform on operating room costs.

Methods: A digital huddle software platform was implemented in March 2022 for neurosurgical procedures performed at a single tertiary care center.

A methodology for estimating SARS-CoV-2 importation risk by air travel into Canada between July and November 2021.

Background: Estimating rates of disease importation by travellers is a key activity to assess both the risk to a country from an infectious disease emerging elsewhere in the world and the effectiveness of border measures. We describe a model used to estimate the number of travellers infected with SARS-CoV-2 into Canadian airports in 2021, and assess the impact of pre-departure testing requirements on importation risk.

Methods: A mathematical model estimated the number of essential and non-essential air travellers infected with SARS-CoV-2, with the latter requiring a negative pre-departure test result.
