Article Synopsis
  • Recent reports suggest some strains of a common bacterium have shown reduced susceptibility to antibiotics, but the significance of this resistance is uncertain due to varying testing methods.
  • The EUCAST has proposed a standardized method for antibiotic susceptibility testing, which this study applied to evaluate the effectiveness of 11 antibiotics on 347 poultry isolates.
  • Findings indicated that all poultry strains were sensitive to most antibiotics, with only one strain showing resistance to benzylpenicillin, confirming previous studies that antibiotic sensitivity in food-related populations remains stable.

Genomic diversity of Listeria monocytogenes isolates from the deboning and slicing areas of three dry-cured ham processing plants was analysed. L. monocytogenes was detected in 58 out of 491 samples from the environment and equipment surfaces, all from the deboning area, with differences in prevalence among facilities.

The presence of Campylobacter species was studied in three Antarctic penguin species, Adélie (Pygoscelis adeliae), chinstrap (Pygoscelis antarctica) and gentoo (Pygoscelis papua). A total of 390 penguins were captured in 12 different rookeries along the Antarctic Peninsula with differences in the amount of human visitation: six colonies were highly visited [Stranger Point, King George Island (P. papua and P.

The objective of this study was to investigate the antibiotic resistance phenotype of Campylobacter jejuni isolates from a poultry flock of broiler production in Spain. Isolates were characterised by RFLP-PCR of the flaA gene and multilocus sequence typing. Minimum inhibitory concentrations of quinolones, aminoglycosides, β-lactams, tetracyclines, phenicols, macrolides and lincosamides were determined by Etest.
