Objective: Electroencephalographic seizures (ES) are common in neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), but identification with continuous electroencephalographic (EEG) monitoring (CEEG) is resource-intensive. We aimed to develop an ES prediction model.

Methods: Using a prospective observational study of 260 neonates with HIE undergoing CEEG, we identified clinical and EEG risk factors for ES, evaluated model performance with area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC), and calculated test characteristics emphasizing high sensitivity.

This review article aims to synthesize existing data on radiation-induced heart diseases in patients undergoing chest radiation therapy and also explores cardiac-sparing techniques to mitigate cardiotoxic effects. We conducted a comprehensive database search to review and consolidate data regarding chest radiotherapy and effects on the heart as well as techniques to minimize exposure to the heart. The research findings demonstrate associations between radiation exposure to cardiac substructures and subsequent cardiotoxicity.

Article Synopsis
  • The United States is facing a worsening drug overdose crisis, with xylazine—an animal sedative—emerging as a significant threat in the illicit drug market.
  • A study in El Paso, Texas, used wastewater analysis to monitor xylazine presence and its potential link to fentanyl use over 14 months, finding xylazine in most treatment plants sampled.
  • The research indicated a direct correlation between xylazine and higher fentanyl levels, urging the need for improved monitoring and targeted health interventions in communities impacted by the opioid epidemic.
