Fecal contamination of surface waters presents significant human health and environmental risks. While many methods for understanding fecal contamination cannot differentiate between human and animal sources, microbial source tracking (MST) marker methods are used to identify fecal sources. To understand how to best employ MST marker data for managing fecal contamination risks, the present study compiled previously collected MST marker data ( = 12,878 samples) from across North America; each sample in the data set had been tested for fecal contamination from one or more of five sources (avian, canine, human, ruminant, swine).

Individual anisotropic two-dimensional (2D) materials have been widely applied for developing polarization-sensitive photodetectors, but they often suffer from limitations in photoresponsivity, detection range, etc. To overcome these challenges, van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures created by stacking different 2D materials provide a promising solution to enhance the performance of the photoelectronic device. In this work, a novel polarization-sensitive photodetector is developed by leveraging a heterojunction formed by InBiSe and anisotropic ReS nanoflakes.

Background: Necrotizing soft tissue infections (NSTIs) are often caused by group A (GAS). As the number of invasive GAS infections decreased during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic restrictions, this study aimed to compare the occurrence of GAS-NSTIs before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study included adult patients with NSTIs admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the University Hospital Zurich, Switzerland, from July 2008 to December 2023.

Understanding disparities in salmonellosis burden is critical for developing effective, equitable prevention programs.
