Background: Cardiac monitoring strategies to detect occult atrial fibrillation (AF) post-stroke differ among healthcare institutions. This may be related to discrepancies in stroke subtype classification/adjudication, and/or consultation of cardiology specialists at Community Hospitals (CoH) and Academic Centers (AcC). Identifying the degree of heterogeneity may encourage development of guideline-directed monitoring protocols, result in higher AF detection rates and treatments, and fewer strokes.

Background: Resource allocation for stroke care was impacted worldwide by the Coronavirus 2019 (COVID19) pandemic. Regionally, worsened stroke outcomes varied, however comparative year-over-year in-hospital performance metrics from the pandemic are unreported. Therefore, within the large Florida Stroke Registry (FSR), we assessed the pandemic's effects upon the American Heart Association (AHA) Get With The Guidelines (GWTG) ischemic stroke metrics and the meta-metric, Defect-Free Care (DFC).

Article Synopsis
  • Chronic stroke survivors often experience persistent disability due to both arm/leg weakness and respiratory muscle weakness, which can negatively affect rehabilitation, quality of life, and increase health risks.
  • The study aims to compare the effects of two different respiratory training programs alongside a comprehensive exercise regimen on various health outcomes in chronic stroke survivors.
  • A randomized controlled trial involving 80 participants will examine the impact of respiratory strength vs. relaxation training over eight weeks, assessing multiple physical and societal participation measures while monitoring health status for one year post-intervention.

Objectives: Administration of sublingual glyceryl trinitrate (GTN) prior to resting radiotracer injection during myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) has been advocated to aid detection of viable myocardium and increase the extent of reversible perfusion defects. However, GTN is also known to reduce resting left ventricular volume and could thus increase the transient ischaemic dilation (TID) ratio, independently of severe or extensive coronary artery disease. We aimed to determine if GTN administration causes an increase in the TID ratio.

Recently, lifestyle medicine (LSM) application has shown feasibility for musculoskeletal pain patients with co-existing lifestyle-related chronic diseases. This study describes early results of a LSM program for musculoskeletal patients with goals to optimize health prior to orthopedic surgery. Fifty-four patients (age: 61 ± 11 years; 39 [72%] females) completed the program from 3/8/22-12/1/23.
