[Use of enhanced external counterpulsation in the treatment and rehabilitation of patients with atherosclerosis obliterans of the lower extremity].

Background: Cardiovascular diseases occupy a leading place in the structure of morbidity in Russia and other developed countries of the world.

Aim: To study the efficiency of using enhanced external counterpulsation in the comprehensive rehabilitation treatment of patients with stages I-IIB obliterating atherosclerosis of the lower extremities (OALE).

Subjects And Methods: A total of 68 patients aged 50 to 78 years with stages I-IIb oale in the presence of clinical symptomatology of arterial insufficiency were examined and treated.

The cardiovascular diseases occupy a leading place in the structure of overall morbidity affecting the population not only of Russia but also of the majority of the developed countries throughout the world; they thus impose the heavy social and economic burden on both the public healthcare services and the modern society in general. At the same time, systemic atherosclerosis is considered to be one of the most common, severe, and life-threatening condition. Despite the presence of a large number of pharmaceutical and surgical methods for the treatment of this pathology, they are not infrequently lacking the desired effectiveness.
