Auditory examination performed by an objective examination method in newborns is aimed to early identify possible permanent auditory defects. Detection of permanent auditory defect already in the first days after birth enables early treatment and rehabilitation with the help of hearing apparatus and later possibly with cochlear implants. The paper presents principles of auditory examinations with the help of otoacoustic emissions and analyzes the results of a screening using otoacoustic emissions performed in a group of 596 newborns and the cause of deafness in a group of 101 prelingually deaf children.

The authors describe the withdrawal syndrome of a beta-adrenolytic in neonates manifested above all 10-16 hours after delivery by alternating bradycardia and marked tachycardia independently on the infant's activity. The withdrawal syndromes correlate with the increased heart rate of the mother after delivery. The authors draw attention to the fact that the withdrawal syndrome in the neonate may develop after delivery if the mother used during pregnancy not only addictive drugs affecting the central nervous system but also drugs affecting the cardiovascular system such as the beta-adrenolytic metipranolol.

A potential teratogenic activity of virus infections caused by the viruses of rubella, influenza, parotitis, hepatitis B, cytomegalovirus and the Epstein-Barr virus was investigated. Different micromethods were used in performing the examinations (ELISA, RIA, NIR, KFR, HIT).
