Design of new smart prosthetics or robotic grippers gives a major impetus to low-cost manufacturing and rapid prototyping of force sensing devices. In this paper, we examine piezoresistive force sensors based on carbon nanotube fibers fabricated by a novel wet pulling technique. The developed sensor is characterized by an adjustable force range coupled with high sensitivity to enable the detection of a wide range of forces and displacements limited by the experimental setup only.

Patients And Methods: Patients scheduled for elective surgery participated in this Institutional review board-approved study from March 2003 to February 2004. Level of sedation was determined both clinically using the Ramsay and the Observer's Assessment of Alertness/Sedation scales and with 2 EEG measures (the Bispectral Index version XP [BIS XP] or the Patient State Analyzer [PSA 4000]).
Background: The purpose of this study was to determine if nocturnal panic patients have greater autonomic dysregulation than patients with daytime panic.
Methods: Three groups were studied: patients who suffer from panic attacks during sleep (n = 12), those who suffer from daytime panic attacks only (n = 12), and control subjects (n = 12). Each subject underwent 24-hour holter monitoring for heart rate variability (HRV), an overnight sleep recording, and sodium lactate challenge during wakefulness.
Objective: To assess the 24-hour temporal-domain heart-rate variability correlates of treatment with fluoxetine or doxepin for depression.
Method: A randomized evaluation of fluoxetine and doxepin measured a 50% change in the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) score as a response to therapy and was correlated with measures of standard deviation of the mean of all 5-minute segments of normal electrocardiographic R-R intervals (SDANN), standard deviation of all normal R-R intervals (SDNN), root mean square of successive differences in R-R intervals (r-MSSD), and percentage difference between adjacent normal R-R intervals that are greater than 50 msec (pNN50) from 24-hour electrocardiogram (ECG) tapes.
Results: Ten out of 14 patients responded.
Background: Diminished heart rate variability is associated with less favorable prognosis after myocardial infarction. However, the prognostic value of early (first 48 hours) measurement and the influence of thrombolytic strategies, myocardial infarction location, left ventricular function, ST-segment shift, and infarct-related artery patency on heart rate variability have not been examined comprehensively.
Methods And Results: Heart rate variability and ST-segment analysis of 48-hour Holter tapes were performed with the use of a commercial system in 204 patients who were part of an ST-monitoring substudy of the Global Utilization of Streptokinase and TPA for Occluded Arteries (GUSTO-I) trial.
