Familial correlates such as parental stability and past family medical history of respondents reporting recent illicit and licit unprescribed drug use or 'problematic' drinking, in a nationwide general population sample in Greece, were explored. The type of survey was cross-sectional and the respondents, aged 12-64, were interviewed in their homes with a multidimensional structured questionnaire. Familial pathology was recorded by the Family Medical History Index, an originally developed instrument.

A nationwide home survey on the identification of possible factors affecting help-seeking behaviour for psychiatric reasons and the prevalence of related psychosocial problems was carried out in a sample of 3754 adults in Greece. Of the total of 570 respondents who reported at the personal interview that they had a serious mental health problem, only 40.8% reported that they had attended a physician or a psychiatrist.

Until recently mental health care in Greece was mainly delivered by old traditional mental hospitals and few outpatient services. In order to induce the process of change the University of Athens started to experiment with a community mental health service. In order to study what has been achieved in a relatively short time, data relating to the delivery of care cohorts of patients from a pilot area in Athens and from an area in the north of the Netherlands were compared.

Attitudes towards mental illness were measured in a probability sample of 1574 male and female adults, residents of two boroughs in the greater Athens area before the development of community mental health services in the area. Multidimensional epidemiological research on drug use in Greece comprising five studies--a study of known cases, a general population survey, a survey of high school students, a study of imprisoned drug addicts and a case identification study--has been undertaken by the Department of Psychiatry, University of Athens. This article summarizes preliminary results obtained in the study of known cases and the general population survey. A study of prevalence of known cases identified 9,689 cases of drug use in Greece (8,821 males and 868 females) who came to the attention of the authorities in 51 counties of the country from 1973 to 1983.
