Psychological mindedness and symptom reduction after psychotherapy in a heterogeneous psychiatric sample.

Background: Psychological mindedness (PM) has been claimed to be beneficial for outcome of various forms of psychotherapy. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of PM on the therapy results of a psychiatric patient sample with heterogeneous psychological symptoms.

Methods: Participants were 110 patients with different diagnoses who were hospitalized at the Center for Psychological Recovery (Rosmalen, Netherlands).

Expression of insulin-like growth factor system components in colorectal tissue and its relation with serum IGF levels.

Context: The insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-system has been implicated in colorectal tumor carcinogenesis. Although both tumor expression levels and serum concentrations of IGF-system components are related to colorectal cancer risk, it is unknown whether IGF levels in tissue and serum are correlated.

Objective: The objective of this study was to determine expression levels of various IGF-system components in different locations of the colorectum, and to investigate whether normal tissue IGF expression levels are correlated with serum IGF-I and IGF-II concentrations.

In vivo p53 response and immune reaction underlie highly effective low-dose radiotherapy in follicular lymphoma.

Very low-dose irradiation (2 x 2 Gy) is a new, effective, and safe local treatment for follicular lymphoma. To understand the biologic mechanisms of this extremely effective response, we compared by microarray the gene-expression profile of patients' biopsies taken before and after radiation. In all patients, a major and consistent induction of p53 target genes was seen.

Most normal mammalian cells have a finite lifespan, thought to constitute a protective mechanism against unlimited proliferation. This phenomenon, called senescence, is driven by telomere attrition, which triggers the induction of tumour suppressors including p16(INK4a) (ref. 5).

DNA-adduct levels as a predictor of outcome for NSCLC patients receiving daily cisplatin and radiotherapy.

We aimed to investigate whether biological factors related to radiosensitivity and chemosensitivity have prognostic significance in non-small-cell-lung-cancer (NSCLC) patients treated with daily low doses of cisplatin and radiotherapy. We treated 27 NSCLC patients with concomitant daily low-dose cisplatin and radiotherapy between 1993 and 1995. Tumour specimens were analyzed for p53 and bcl-2 expression, and for cell proliferation using antibodies against ki-67.
