Non-detection of emerging and re-emerging pathogens in wastewater surveillance to confirm absence of transmission risk: A case study of polio in New York.

Infectious disease surveillance systems, including wastewater surveillance, can alert communities to the threat of emerging pathogens. We need methods to infer understanding of transmission dynamics from non-detection. We estimate a sensitivity of detection of poliovirus in wastewater to inform the sensitivity of wastewater surveillance for poliovirus using both a clinical epidemiology and fecal shedding approach.

Palliative endoscopic treatment of malignant central airway obstruction.

Purpose: To examine the outcome of palliative endoscopic treatment of malignant central airway obstruction (CAO) and identify predictors for Days Alive and Out of Hospital (DAOH), overall survival and treatment related complications.

Methods: Consecutive adult patients treated endoscopically for malignant CAO at Aarhus University Hospital from 2012 to 2022 were included in the study. Statistical analyses were carried out to identify predictors for DAOH, survival and complications.

Posterior-superior insula repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation reduces experimental tonic pain and pain-related cortical inhibition in humans.

High frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to the posterior-superior insula (PSI) may produce analgesic effects. However, the alterations in cortical activity during PSI-rTMS analgesia remain poorly understood. The present study aimed to determine whether tonic capsaicin-induced pain and cortical inhibition (indexed using TMS-electroencephalography) are modulated by PSI-rTMS.
