Rotifers of the upper Paraná River floodplain: additions to the checklist.

Rotifers present a high diversity in freshwater ecosystems. This study registered 11 genera and 42 species, new records for the Upper Paraná River floodplain. These results showed an increase in rotifer diversity in this ecosystem from 184 to 230 species.

Bilateral microtia and cleft palate in cousins with Diamond-Blackfan anemia.

We report on maternal first cousins with bilateral microtia, micrognathia, cleft palate and hematologic findings of Diamond-Blackfan anemia (DBA). The similarity of findings shared between our cases and a female reported by Hasan and Inoue [1993] suggests that this is a distinctive syndrome, rather than a chance association. DBA is a heterogeneous disorder, caused in about 25% of cases by heterozygous mutations in the RPS19 gene (DBA1).

Abundance of cladocerans in the littoral regions of two environments of the Upper Paraná River floodplain, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil.

The abundance of cladocerans recorded in plankton samples from the littoral regions of two environments (Baía River and Guaraná lake), the Upper Paraná River floodplain and some limnological variables important in controlling their abundance were investigated at three sites in the lake and two in the river, from March/93 to January/94. Abundance was highest in the lake, chiefly during high water. Bosminidae dominated in both environments and hydrological periods (high and low water).

The Towne's projection expands the dimensions of video-radiographic evaluation of velopharyngeal function. Patient position is less complicated. A complete view of the sphincter is obtained in a single view.

The use of microvascular free flaps for soft tissue augmentation of the face in children with hemifacial microsomia.

The extent of facial deformity from hemifacial microsomia varies considerably. Minor degrees of asymmetry may be barely perceptible. Severe defects involve deficiencies and asymmetry of bone and soft tissue.
