A Medial Subvastus Approach for Lateral Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty: Technique Description and Early Outcome Results.

Background: Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) treats arthritis involving only one compartment of the knee. Lateral UKA is mainly performed through medial parapatellar or lateral parapatellar approaches to the knee. This technique article introduces a medial subvastus approach to lateral UKA, discusses the clinical rationale behind its use, and offers a preliminary retrospective study on short-term outcomes of lateral UKAs using the lateral vs medial subvastus approaches.

The influence of femoral component design on postoperative periprosthetic femoral fracture after uncemented direct anterior total hip arthroplasty in the elderly.

Introduction: Aging populations and expanding indications will greatly increase the volume of total hip arthroplasty (THA) in all age groups, including patients over 70 years old. Minimally invasive, uncemented direct anterior THA offers potential advantages for treating elderly patients. However, literature indicates higher risks of postoperative periprosthetic femur fractures (PPFFs) with both direct anterior THA and uncemented femoral stems.

Vision-related quality of life in adults with severe peripheral vision loss: a qualitative interview study.

Background: Existing patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures may not be relevant to the full range of functional and vision-related quality of life (VR-QOL) concerns of individuals with vision impairment due to severe peripheral field loss (PFL). Measurement of VR-QOL in severe PFL is important in order to determine the effectiveness of vision rehabilitation interventions for this population. The purpose of this study was to characterize the impact of severe PFL due to retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and glaucoma on VR-QOL as the initial phase in the development of a novel PRO measure.

Factors Associated With Discharge Home Among Medical ICU Patients in an Early Mobilization Program.

Objectives: One goal of early mobilization programs is to facilitate discharge home after an ICU hospitalization, but little is known about which factors are associated with this outcome. Our objective was to evaluate factors associated with discharge home among medical ICU patients in an early mobilization program who were admitted to the hospital from home.

Design: Retrospective cohort study of medical ICU patients in an early mobilization program.

Prevalence of Postoperative Periprosthetic Femur Fractures Between Two Different Femoral Component Designs Used in Direct Anterior Total Hip Arthroplasty.

Background: Periprosthetic femur fractures are a well-documented complication following direct anterior uncemented total hip arthroplasty. The purpose of this study is to compare the prevalence of postoperative periprosthetic femur fractures between 2 different femoral component designs used in direct anterior total hip arthroplasty.

Methods: Beginning in February 2015, a single fellowship-trained adult reconstruction surgeon performed 361 consecutive direct anterior total hip replacements using a flat, single-taper, wedged femoral implant.
