Madagascar is one of the poorest countries in the world. The country's extreme weather conditions, poor sanitation, and weak economy facilitate the spread of parasitic diseases. Infections with intestinal parasites are particularly dangerous for children because they can cause malnutrition and anemia, which, in turn, have a negative effect on children's cognitive functions and physical development.

This study provides an overview of the quality of surface water and groundwater in rural and peri-urban areas of Madagascar, Uganda, and Rwanda. Selected physico-chemical parameters, inorganic species (including inorganic ions), and organic pollution indicators, such as total organic carbon, non-ionic surfactants, cationic surfactants, anionic surfactants, sum of phenolic compounds and formaldehyde, were analysed.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe efficiency of the 1.5 μm emission associated with the 4I13/2 → 4I15/2 transition of Er3+ ions of a series of Er3+ and Yb3+/Er3+-doped Bi2ZnOB2O6 microcrystalline powders was investigated. Bi2ZnOB2O6 is an excellent nonlinear optical material as well as a good host matrix for luminescent rare-earth ions.
