A fully digital photoplethysmographic (PPG) sensor and actuator has been developed. The sensing circuit uses one Light Emitting Diode (LED) for emitting light into human tissue and one LED for detecting the reflectance light from human tissue. A Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) is used to control the LEDs and determine the PPG and Blood Oxygen Saturation (S(p)O(2)).

Background: The clinical utility of spectroscopic methods for the diagnosis of cervical cancer is limited by significant inter-patient variation in the spectroscopic properties of the cervix. Improved understanding of the contributions of the components of cervical tissue to the observed spectra would therefore be helpful in the development of spectroscopic approaches to the study of cervical disease in vivo.

We present a theoretical analysis of the image formation in structured illumination wide-field fluorescence microscopy (SIWFFM). We show that the optically sectioned images obtained with this approach possess the optical sectioning strengths comparable to those obtained with the confocal microscope. We further show that the transfer function behaviour is directly comparable to that of the true confocal instrument.
