Cefotaxime and ceftriaxone are two prominent third-generation cephalosporin antibiotics, which are a class of antimicrobial agents with overlapping antibacterial spectra and therapeutic indications, commonly used in treating severe bacterial infections, including meningitis, sepsis, and respiratory tract infections. Despite their shared antibacterial coverage, these antibiotics differ significantly in their pharmacokinetic characteristics such as half-life, protein binding, and tissue penetration. This comprehensive review systematically compares the pharmacokinetic profiles, pharmacological attributes, clinical efficacy, and safety profiles of cefotaxime and ceftriaxone.
