Objective: To assess the influence of serum carnosinase (CN1) on the course of diabetic kidney disease (DKD).
Methods: hCN1 transgenic (TG) mice were generated in a BTBR genetic background to allow the spontaneous development of DKD in the presence of serum carnosinase. The influence of serum CN1 expression on obesity, hyperglycemia, and renal impairment was assessed.
Purpose: To evaluate the possible role of intraoperative cerebral emboli in the origin of perioperative stroke during major head and neck surgical procedures.
Materials And Methods: Eleven patients undergoing major head and neck surgery that involved direct manipulation of the carotid sheath were the participants in this study. Transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasound was used intraoperatively to detect possible cerebral emboli.
The improved survival of patients sustaining massive head injuries has increased the number of temporal bone fractures being managed by otolaryngologists and neurosurgeons. We performed a prospective analysis of 35 patients with head injury with temporal bone trauma. The major emphasis of this study was to investigate the incidence, management, and outcome of facial nerve injury in such patients and to evaluate the importance of electrodiagnostics in the surgical management of the facial nerve.

The risk of perioperative strokes has been demonstrated to be very low in general surgical procedures, and somewhat higher in cardiac and carotid artery procedures. We describe 5 patients who underwent major head and neck procedures not requiring carotid ligation and who postoperatively suffered strokes. These occurred between the first and ninth postoperative days.
