Background: LAAO is an interventional, prophylactic treatment to prevent cardioembolic stroke in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation.

Aims: The aim of this study was to assess gender differences and age-related in-hospital course of all patients undergoing left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) in Germany.

Methods: The Research Data Center of the Federal Statistical Office accessed interrogation of its Diagnosis Related Groups (DRG) statistics database.

Epithelial outgrowth through mesenchymal rings drives alveologenesis.

Determining how alveoli are formed and maintained is critical to understanding lung organogenesis and regeneration after injury. To study the cellular dynamics of this critical stage of lung development, we have used scanned oblique-plane illumination microscopy of living lung slices to observe alveologenesis in real time at high resolution over several days. Contrary to the prevailing notion that alveologenesis occurs by airspace subdivision via ingrowing septa, we find that alveoli form by ballooning epithelial outgrowth supported by contracting mesenchymal ring structures.

"I still can feel the sickness": Withdrawal experiences of people on methadone maintenance treatment.

Introduction: Opioid withdrawal is a regular occurrence for many people who use illicit opioids (PWUIO) involving acute physical and psychological pain. Yet, there is very little data on the withdrawal experience of people in methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) and almost none from the patients' experience. Learning more about patients' withdrawal experiences can help to inform policies and practices that are better suited to address withdrawal and may improve patient satisfaction as well as uptake and retention.

Femoral or Radial Secondary Access in TAVR: A Subanalysis From the Multicenter PULSE Registry.

Background: Transradial secondary access (TR-SA) may serve as an alternative to the traditional femoral secondary access (TF-SA) for pigtail placement in transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).

Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the incidence of secondary access-related vascular complications after TR-SA or TF-SA in TAVR.

Methods: The PULSE (Plug or sUture based vascuLar cloSurE after TAVR) registry retrospectively evaluated data of 10,120 patients who underwent transfemoral TAVR at 10 heart centers from 2016 to 2021.

Dysregulated alveolar epithelial cell progenitor function and identity in Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome.

Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome (HPS) is a genetic disorder of endosomal protein trafficking associated with pulmonary fibrosis in specific subtypes, including HPS-1 and HPS-2. Single mutant HPS1 and HPS2 mice display increased fibrotic sensitivity while double mutant HPS1/2 mice exhibit spontaneous fibrosis with aging, which has been attributed to HPS mutations in alveolar epithelial type II (AT2) cells. We utilized HPS mouse models and human lung tissue to investigate mechanisms of AT2 cell dysfunction driving fibrotic remodeling in HPS.
