Behavioural evolution of Neotropical social wasps (Vespidae: Polistinae): the queen selection process.

All Epiponini wasps are polygynic, with multiple queens alternating over the colony cycle. There are several potential queens in the early stages of this cycle, but as it progresses, the number of queens is reduced. Because most individuals remain reproductively totipotent, there is great potential for conflicts over reproduction.

Taxonomy and the unusual morphological similarity among Hypocerides Schmitz species (Diptera: Phoridae).

Hypocerides Schmitz comprises seven species of considerable morphological similarity according to authors that described or reviewed material from the genus. This lack of variation is problematic for its taxonomy as little is known about which structures could be evidence for species recognition or even about which sex is the most informative to its species-level taxonomy. In this study, I examined males and females of the genus from the Neotropical, Nearctic, and Palearctic Regions in search of informative morphological characters for the genus taxonomy.

Forty-one new species of Coniceromyia Borgmeier (Diptera: Phoridae), an identification key, and new distributional records for the species of the genus.

Forty-one new species of the mostly neotropical genus Coniceromyia Borgmeier are described. The descriptions follow the methodology of recent works on the genus taxonomy and illustrate habitus, foremetatarsus, wing, hind femur, and hypopygium for each species. Unique features of some species are also illustrated, including several male features possibly related to sexual selection such as processes on different tarsomeres of the foreleg.
