To achieve a single fully harmonised research data set suitable for analysis from data collected at multiple sites requires not only semantic integration of collection concepts and convergence onto single collection units, but harmonisation of data collection processes. We describe our experience of identifying harmonisation challenges in the Precision ALS project, with particular focus on process alignment challenges in a multi-site multi-national research data collection project.

Background: Hearing loss (HL) is prevalent in older individuals. It is suggested that there is an association between age-related HL, walking and balance, leading to poorer function and increased risk of falls in older individuals.

Research Question: Is HL associated with physical performance, gait variability, and postural sway in older adults, and will additional dizziness moderate the effect of HL on balance?

Methods: In this cross-sectional study we examined 100 older individuals (age ≥70 years, 60 % females), divided in two groups, with or without age-related HL.

Introduction: Vertigo, dizziness, gaze instability and disequilibrium are highly prevalent in people with MS (PwMS) and head movement induced dizziness is commonly reported. Vestibular physical therapy (VPT) is a specialised, non-invasive and effective therapy for these problems but usually involves travel for the person to a specialist center with both personal and carbon costs. The use of wearable sensors to track head movement and smartphone applications to deliver and track programs has potential to improve VPT in MS.

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is a complex syndrome associated with increased myocardial stiffness and cardiac filling abnormalities. Prior studies implicated increased α-tubulin detyrosination, which is catalyzed by the vasohibin enzymes, as a contributor to increased stabilization of the cardiomyocyte microtubule network (MTN) and stiffness in failing human hearts. We explored whether increased MTN detyrosination contributed to impaired diastolic function in the ZSF1 obese rat model of HFpEF and designed a small-molecule vasohibin inhibitor to ablate MTN detyrosination in vivo.
