Objective evaluation of distance-based family nurse practitioner (FNP) students can be challenging. One FNP program piloted a teaching innovation, the video-enhanced objective structured clinical examination (VE-OSCE) or "flip" of the traditional face-to-face OSCE, to assess student clinical performance in a controlled online environment using a teleconferencing platform. This project sought to assess the VE-OSCE design, implementation, and ability to identify FNP student learning needs.

Background: Urinary catheters are associated, commonly with bacteriuria and frequently with urinary tract infection. Tamm-Horsfall Protein (THP) is urine's most abundant protein and is known to bind to uropathogenic bacteria. The role of THP in the pathogenesis of catheter associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) is not clear.

Objective: To compare the growth of acid-fast bacilli on classically formulated Lowenstein-Jensen media and Middlebrook 7H11 agar to modified Middlebrook 7H9 broth.

Design: Microbiology culture results were evaluated to determine the number of days required to detect growth of acid-fast bacilli from clinical specimens inoculated on different media.

Data: Three thousand one hundred fifty-seven acid fast bacilli cultures were performed from May 1996 through May 1999.

Background: Gram-negative bacilli antimicrobial resistance remains a significant problem for patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). Patterns of antimicrobial use may be a contributing factor.

Methods: Gram-negative bacilli from ICU patients of a Veterans Affairs (VA) medical center were tested to determine in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility (205 isolates in 1995 and 209 in 1999).
